Remember Someone’s Name When Thinking About Your Friends
I’m not good at names. So you. Everyone is bad at names. You’ve read a million tips for remembering people’s names and none of them worked. But maybe it will! This is one of the simplest and least tricky tricks I’ve heard, and I’ve used it before without even thinking about it. Analogue Redditor Hedgehog says :
Instead of trying to remember a person’s name, I just mentally associate him with a person I know with the same name. So, if I meet a guy named Daniel, I’ll just try to remember my old lab partner Daniel. I seem to remember this more, because I can connect the person I just met with difficult memories, and not with one word that I will inevitably forget.
You think of a friend with the same name and imagine these two people together. It’s so easy it’s almost a hack – which is true of some of the greatest hacks. And as the Reddit editor says, you have tons of associations with people you know, as opposed to rhyming mnemonics or even a celebrity name.
One caveat, as analogHedgehog suggests, “The only names I have problems with right now are the ones I haven’t heard before.” You may need to seek help from a celebrity or equivalent. Or you may have to find out their last name and pretend that they are related to your friend.
