Find Special Subreddits With This Tool

The cool thing about Reddit is that you can only subscribe to subreddits you like and ignore anything you don’t like. Smaller and more specialized subreddits work best, but are more difficult to find. The new sayit tool helps you find them.

Sayit shows a network map of the subreddits, judging their similarity by the number of common commentators. So, if I look at r / Seashanties , I see that it is similar to r / IrishMusic and r / tinwhistle , because many of the same redditors post and comment on all of these subreddits. (It also “looks like” a couple of unrelated video game subreddits, simply because they have a lot of contributors in common.)

This is a great way to find subreddits that address the same topic in different ways. If you are subscribed to r / rpg , graph sayit recommends subreddits for certain board games like r / Shadowrun , r / DungeonsAndDragons, and r / Pathfinder_RPG . But he also links to:

Plus subreddits about specific settings, releases and scenarios in D&D and other games. It is not exhaustive – for example, there is no link to the small but excellent r / rpghumor – but it can reveal links that you won’t find on Reddit itself.

Click on a subreddit to see some recent posts. Double-click a subreddit to create a new graph around it. If you open the r / rpg graph and double click on r / magicTCG (a large Magic: The Gathering subreddit ), you will see subreddits like r / ModernMagic , r / custommagic , r / spikes , r / gwent , r / BadMtgCombos . r / magicthecirclejerking , r / CompetitiveEDH, and r / hearthstone .

With Sayit, you can delve deeper into a topic with more specific subreddits, or find related topics that have a common readership. You can search for a political subreddit and find others for people of the same political persuasion, or infiltrate those at different points on the spectrum. Find basically your city’s subreddit, and you can find subreddits for housing, jobs, restaurants, local politics, or even specific areas. It’s like a Reddit subway map.
