How to Enable Dark Mode in Windows 10 Mail

This week, Windows 10 Mail finally has a dark mode that’s worth using. After weeks of testing with insiders, the updated Mail & Calendar app now includes a more useful version of the email feature: one that actually makes the entire app dark and offers the ability to quickly go bright. “When it’s hard to read.

Technically, prior to this update, the Windows 10 mail app had a dark mode option, but this toggle only applied to its sidebars. The “reading area” of email, where you read and compose emails, remained vibrant. But no more! Dark mode now changes all panels to dark grayscale, making it easier to work with eyes in low light.

To switch to dark mode, click the gear icon in the lower left corner of the app to access the settings menu, then go to “personalization.” In the Personalization menu, click Dark Mode.

Once it’s on, you can also quickly turn it on and off for the body of the letter using the quick toggle switch in the toolbar at the top of the window. In dark mode, the icon looks like the sun. In light mode, it looks like the moon. As The Verge points out, some aspects of email can be harder to read in dark mode, so this is a quick way to make sure you can read the entire message.
