Use AI to Add Depth of Field to Any Photo With This App

If you have a newer smartphone, it probably has the ability to shoot 3D images, or at least images with some depth of field.

To do this, your phone must have two cameras. If it doesn’t, you are stuck in 2D photographs. Or you? Dpth is a smartphone app for iOS and Android that takes your regular 2D images and uses artificial intelligence to transform them into an image where you can play with depth of field.

Having tried it with a few photos, I can tell that your experience will vary depending on what type of photography you are trying to use it with. Shots in which everything is in focus work best simply because this tool allows you to adjust more of the image.

For example, the photos I took with things like my dog or beer, which already had a slight bokeh effect, barely changed, while photos that were completely in focus across the board gave me a little more play with.

Here’s a video of how it works:

This is not one of those apps that you intend to use all the time, but it can be a quick and easy way to get bokeh effect with your older device (or just a photo taken with an older device).

And then I processed it through Dpth, highlighting it with the mouse:

It’s a mild improvement, but it can be fun in your arsenal. The app is also working on taking 3D photos in the future, which could make the game a lot more fun.
