Create a Soothing Corner for Your Child
We all need a small area where we can relax after a long day, when we are in a bad mood, or when we just need to be alone for a bit. For you, this could mean relaxing in a hot tub or reading a book in your favorite quiet place. For children, a special tranquil zone can be an oasis of overstimulation, power struggles, and sibling rivalry.
I know, I know. They already have plenty of space in bedrooms, playrooms, or children’s caves . They – and their belongings – have already taken over most of the house. But a small, soothing corner in the corner of their bedroom, playroom, or even the main living area can be set aside for storing toys and more for relaxing and replenishing their energy.
Did you have a hard day at school? Sit in a soothing corner for 15 minutes before starting your homework. Can’t play outside because it’s raining for the fifth day in a row? Take the book to a secluded corner for a while. Angry about the general injustice of the world around you? Calming corner!
Of course, if you are going to dedicate a corner of your home to serenity, there are a few things to keep in mind to make the end result truly serene.
Become neutral
It may be tempting to add some bright, cheerful primary colors to your child’s corner. You want this to be a happy place! But bright colors can cause overstimulation, and overstimulation is not what we’re aiming for here. Choose furniture and decor in neutral colors and natural materials (more wood, less plastic).
Think softly
Fluffy rug. Several large decorative pillows. A beanbag chair and some of your favorite stuffed animals. Soft materials to rest and cuddle on will make the area feel cozy and inviting.
Limit books and toys
If your kids will be using this space primarily as a reading space, it’s tempting to pull out a bookshelf and fill it with plenty of material. Instead, keep the choice simple and minimal by filling a couple of soft baskets with handfuls of books. Store most books in another room or closet and change options from time to time.
If you have shelving in a corner, take out the books and add some family photos, favorite souvenirs, and soothing activities like puzzles, bricks, or fidget toys. A small plant or two can also add some warmth to the space.
Let there be light
More precisely, let it be natural light. Probably one of the most important considerations for your nook is whether it’s near a window that lets in lots of natural light. You want a space that feels bright and airy, and sunlight is the cheapest, easiest, and most effective way to create a welcoming atmosphere.
