How Much Money Can You Save by Cutting Your Own Hair?

I haven’t paid for a haircut since January.

That’s not to say I didn’t cut my hair – I bought a pair of Tinkle Razor combs for $ 3 to get the pixie cut and quickly switched to the $ 3 ConairPro Jilbere Professional Precision Hairbrush (for which I paid a total of $ 8 , 99 plus tax).

It just means that I stopped cutting my hair for $ 60 every four weeks.

This is not the first time I have switched to do-it-yourself haircuts. I’ve spent about eight years on professional quality scissors to keep my long hair tidy and trimmed using the old ponytail, cut an inch or two, straighten any torn ends technique.

Then I decided to shorten it and followed a routine of “haircut every four or five weeks.”

Then I thought about all the money I was spending on haircuts and bought some razor combs instead.

I am not alone in my hair care calculations. The Frugalwood family simply calculated how much a haircut at home costs :

Mr. F.W. started cutting my hair in February 2015 and I estimate that in those four years I have saved over $ 1,600 on haircuts (that would have been the conservative four haircuts a year at $ 100 per haircut, which I did). used to pay for haircuts).

And I’m young, guys, I will need haircuts for a long time. Mr. F.W., for his part, made me comb his hair for almost seven years, which I reckon saved over $ 3,360 !!!!!!!! That’s two buzzes a month – which is what we do – at $ 20 a buzz (as the barber in Cambridge charged it). Taken together, our haircut saved us $ 4,960. This is not nonsense!

I will save $ 660 this year by cutting my own hair minus the cost of the Tinkle Razor comb and my trusty Jilbere Cut Comb.

Is it for everyone? Obviously not. But if you’ve been looking for a way to cut a few costs – a play on words – you could do worse than learning how to trim your own mane.

Since I am assuming that you will want to see a photo proof, there you have it:

If you also cut your own hair, let us know how much money you think it saved you, and feel free to share your haircut tips! Here’s my top tip: watch a lot of YouTube tutorial videos first . (I watched this pixie cut video by Laura Noiset probably six times, and I also liked this pixie cut video from freiundwunderbar .) Then swallow your fear and do it. It gets easier the first time, and you learn better too.

Also, this does not mean that you have to act on an all-or-never basis; You can have a professional haircut / reshape every few months and trim your own hair in between. Being able to do “basic grooming” will save you a lot of money and you may even find it to be a lot of fun.
