What Is the Most Interesting Bar in Your City?
Every bar must have a “thing”. My all-time favorite is Burp Castle in Manhattan’s East Village, convent-style; the bartenders wear monastic robes and gently swish the diners to drown out the noise. My local High Dive bar in Brooklyn isn’t all that different, but it serves popcorn, has a pinball in the back, and a chalkboard in front where patrons can invest in each other.
New York is full of unique bars: the beauty salon has armchairs; The Sand Bar is heated and the floor is covered with beach sand; The Frying Pan is not really unique because it is one of the few bars on the boats. But you could probably list even better bars than those in your hometown. San Francisco has a Vesuvio, Portland has a Funhouse Lounge, and the Swiss city of Gruyeres has an HR Giger bar.
We want to hear about the most special and exciting bars in your city – or the city you’ve visited – whether it’s diving, speakeasy, gourmet cocktail venues, or even great hotel bars like Driskill in Austin. They might be a bit touristy, they might be locals only. Places with great snacks, a huge selection of beer poured from special gadgets, and terrible drinks on the cheap. Places with weird politics, cool backstory, or local celebrities. Places with a certain atmosphere, places that you won’t find anywhere else. And hey – what should we drink?
