How to Avoid Luggage Screening
Why do millions of categories determine when you board a plane? The Intelligencer explains : Airlines have figured out that an accidental landing is faster than a direct landing because it distributes people all over the plane as they pack their luggage and sit down, instead of the rear being attacked and then the front becoming a mob. Then the airlines realized that some passengers would pay more for early boarding and thus ensure they could find a place upstairs for their luggage – without having to check it.
After the Intelligencer explores the economics of boarding order, he gives advice on how to avoid being checked at the gate, even if you are in the last group to board: use padded luggage. You will most likely find enough room to fit it between other people’s suitcases or under the seat in front of you. And you have a better chance of convincing the staff at the plane door to let you pass with that bag.
Moving to soft luggage will require some adjustment – and if it does check, a soft bag will be much more vulnerable than a suitcase with a hard suitcase – but it is also lighter and easier to carry. I zipped through many airports with a large backpack, walk faster than everyone else pulls a roller suitcase, and always found a place for it upstairs.

See which sections are primarily valid for your airlines and try to book them in those sections. Then check in 24 hours before departure to see if someone canceled the ticket and vacated the best seat. As a last resort, when employees say they will need to check your bag, ask very politely to try and pack it .
