Roadtrippers , a web and mobile travel planning platform, has a popular app available for bothiOS and Android . If you’re planning a trip, this app can identify points of interest such as trails, hikes, scenic spots, parks, and nature reserves along the way.
If you’re the kind of person who plans ahead, it will probably be easier for you to first create a ride in the desktop version and then preview it in your app as you hit the road. (While playing with the desktop version, I found that there is a place called Reptiland that we pass several times a year on our way to the family, and which I now have to take my son with.) But the app works great for fly too.
Roadtrippers will also help you find a new scenic walk in your city or wherever you go or explore.
Roads from Porsche
The newest kid in Scenic Routes and Navigation is Roads by Porsche , which bills itself as “a community building app for people who love to drive.”
It’s still new ( iOS only for now) and users can save and share their favorite routes. I noticed that there weren’t many options near me yet – the closest was about 23 miles from my house. But this should grow over time, and what I love about the app is that users can add descriptions to the drive. You can inquire about the type of landscape you see, nearby lunch spots, and road conditions such as elevation differences or how winding a road is.
You can also search the broader area by rating, number of drives, newest, or length if you just want to browse scenic spots that you might want to do in the future.
Of course, if you want a truly classic road trip, you can always go old school and throw out the paper maps. It’s fun too.
