Retain Job Description for Future Wage Negotiations
You have a warm and fluffy job – at least for now. After a lengthy application process that included at least one phone interview and two face-to-face interviews, you were offered a job that you know is ideal for you. You have the skills and qualifications they need, work is exactly what you love to do; you imagine that you will be happy in this position for a long time.
You get an offer letter, accept the job, and now that the deal is closed, you can step out of the job description, revise the formal letter and start thinking about how you will quit your current job.
Wait, freeze. You might want to hang these papers. They can come in handy, as Reddit user u / misery_chastain points out :
Always keep a copy of your job posting and letter of offer from your employer.
So you can refer to it when you go beyond your listed responsibilities and point out to your employer why you deserve a promotion.
Of course, the job description probably includes the clause “other responsibilities as assigned,” but being able to specify exactly what was expected of you and how much more you contributed to the position will be valuable in a future negotiation conversation. …
(Note that this only works if you do your job well and really do your best. Otherwise, this is probably not the best tactic.)
