Buy What You Love in Any Color
At the beginning of the summer, I did a bold move. I drove to Target, tried on a few different things, and settled on some comfy shorts and a cotton T-shirt, which I called my “summer work from home” suit. And then I bought gray and black shorts and a T-shirt in red, orange, burgundy and white and yellow.
This was not my first rodeo in which all colors are bought. Most of my favorite pieces of clothing throughout my adult life have lived in my closet in different colors. I have six of the same damn cardigans, two of the same cropped jeans (I often think a third pair would be good), and I can’t TELL you how disappointed I was when the cotton dress I found at the sale counter last month in only one color. I wanted. More.
It occurred to me that maybe I overdid it a little, but it turned out that I have not:
Despite the use of “Mari Kondo” as a verb , I am so fascinated by this tweet. This is why this is great and why, if you haven’t already, you should:
1. When, a month after the purchase, you realize that you are thinking, “God, I have never had such a soft, such a perfect shirt,” and you come back for an extra one, it will be completely out of size. They will have 47 small and 59 large ones, but your mediums are gone. Someone else read this post and bought them.
2. Dressing is much easier in the morning. You know this shirt goes well with these pants and yesterday you were in blue and today it is gray, boom, you are out the door.
3. If you really love it, you will catch it or get it dirty somewhere during the second or third wear. But don’t you panic now? You have three spare.
4. Everything will last longer. Instead of wearing that one favorite shirt over and over, week after week, you’re spreading out wear, which means every piece will last longer. You don’t want an affair with a favorite subject; you want marriage.
Final point: This isn’t just about clothing. Find a pair of really comfortable slippers? Get them in green too. Discover the world’s most perfect kitchen rag? Buy four (you know, all sponges are bad ). In fact, I can’t imagine why you don’t have a bouquet of your favorite scented candle. It could be terminated!
The only thing better than one thing you love is a bundle of things you love.
