Describe Your Location Anywhere With What3Words
Whether you are at home or in the office, simply state where you are: just enter an address or a name that you can use on Google. But if you’re trying to meet someone at their blanket on the beach, or if you’re telling a friend where you got lost in the woods, that’s a more difficult problem.
Latitude and longitude have been created for this, but there is a much more convenient method: what3words . There are three words associated with each 3 by 3 meter square of land. The global headquarters of What3words is located in London at a place called ///filled.count.soap. Looking around my area, I can tell you that the place where bird watchers gathered this spring to see the nest of bald eagles is ///threading.thrusters.rulers.
Emergency services use this app in the UK : if you have an accident but don’t know how to describe where you are, they will ask you to download the app and give them your three-word code. While not common here, codes are still a convenient way to remember and communicate certain areas, whether they have an official name or address.
The app allows you to enter a code and find a route to it so you can use what3words to find your car in an airport parking lot or meet a friend on a specific trail to go camping. You can also make lists of places in the app, for example your favorite fishing spots. Best of all, it doesn’t require a data connection to work – just your phone’s GPS.
