How to Get Early Access to New OneDrive Features
Microsoft’s OneDrive is a great cloud storage service for Windows 10 users, but there is a way to make it even better. Just as participating in the Windows Insider Program lets you preview new features in Windows 10, using the OneDrive Preview program can give you early access to new OneDrive features, such as better file sync performance.
Usually, when you sign up for the Windows Insider program, you also participate in the OneDrive Insider program, but you don’t need to use potentially buggy versions of Windows 10 to beta test OneDrive features. Here’s a quick guide on how you can join the OneDrive Previewer without registering as a Windows Insider.
- Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows taskbar. (You may have to click the Show Hidden Icons option to find it.)
- Tap More> Settings.
- Open the About tab
- Turn on the Get OneDrive Insider preview updates before release option and click OK.
- Restart your computer and OneDrive will check for automatic updates and install the preview build when it becomes available.
If you have any problems using the beta versions of OneDrive, you can easily revert to the stable version of the app with minimal effort by ditching the OneDrive previewer:
- As with the method above, click the OneDrive icon in the icon bar, then go to More> Settings> About.
- Uncheck the “Get OneDrive Insider preview updates before release” checkbox.
- Click OK.
Now that you’ve given up on the preview program, you can either wait for OneDrive to automatically revert to a stable build on its own (restarting your computer might help), or you can forcefully uninstall and reinstall OneDrive manually.
- Open the start menu in a window and click the gear-shaped settings icon.
- In the settings menu, select Apps> Apps & features.
- Scroll down to Microsoft OneDrive and click Uninstall.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the uninstallation process.
- Then, to reinstall the stable version of OneDrive, go to the Microsoft support site and click Download OneDrive for Windows.
- Wait for the download to complete, then open the file and follow the instructions to complete the installation.
