Make Sure You Buy Apple’s New USB-C AV Adapter for Mac and IPad Pro
Apple has updated its USB-C Multiport Digital AV Adapter , a dongle that you connect to a Mac or (newer) iPad Pro, so you can connect to an external display or a standard USB device. The newer version of its multiport adapter adds support for HDMI 2.0, which includes:
- 4K UHD and 60Hz video playback
- HDR support (HDR10 and Dolby Vision)
This is a great upgrade from previous USB-C AV multiport adapters that only supported HDMI 1.4b. Although Apple has discontinued the old version of the adapter and is now selling the new version in its official store (online or retail), it will take some time before the old adapters disappear from the shelves of other stores. To make sure that you take a new key, A2119, check the model number on the packaging (old model – A1621).
While the adapter will work with any Apple device with a USB-C connection, you will only be able to make the most of an HDMI 2.0 connection (driving a 3840 x 2160 60Hz display) only if you have one of the following devices.
- Mac Book Pro 15-inch (2017 model or newer)
- Retina iMac (2017 model or newer)
- iMac Pro
- iPad Pro
Your device must also have macOS Mojave (10.14.6 or later) or iOS 12.4 (or later) installed.
