How to Get a Child to Eat a Heel of Bread

The heels of a loaf of bread – those ends that are crusty on one side – are as good as the rest of the bread. But good luck explaining this to a four year old. Instead of trying to convince them, just make their sandwich inside out and they’ll never know.

This trick has been fooling the kids in my family for years. Of course, don’t let them see you make your sandwich. Turn your back on them, everyone is indifferent, and make a sandwich like this:

  1. Spread peanut butter and jelly on the crust of your heels. (You can of course make other sandwiches in the same way.)
  2. Glue the sandwich.
  3. If the edges look a little funky, just trim them off. If your child likes cut crust, or if he likes figurine sliced sandwiches, you are golden.

I tell myself that this is the cleanest and most honest way to deceive your children, because there is no nutritional or other difference between heels and any other piece of bread. Their pickiness is simply a preference for one texture over another, and if they eat a sandwich without objection, this cunning and evil trick won’t hurt anyone.
