Try Out the New Zoom Features Earlier in Firefox 73
Customizable zoom levels are one of the best accessibility features in Firefox. Users can adjust the zoom size for each website, and the browser will remember and apply the preferred zoom level every time you visit the website. This makes it much easier for visually impaired users to navigate and read pages, but it can be annoying to have to tweak this for every new page you visit. In addition, zooming too much can also distort images and other graphic elements on the website and undermine the benefits of the zoom function. Fortunately, Firefox will soon add two new settings that fix these shortcomings.
The first is a universal zoom setting that allows you to set the default zoom for all websites you visit in Firefox, and the second is a text-only zoom option that only enlarges the text and keeps images and other visuals as much as possible. intact (although there will definitely be some changes to the page layout if you zoom in too far). Both settings were seen in the latest test build of Firefox Nightly by German Firefox developer Søren Hentzschel (via gHacks ).
You can try both settings right now by downloading the Firefox Nightly build, which is the most advanced and most unstable Firefox beta yet. Only use this if you don’t mind bugs or glitches. Those who prefer to use the stable public release will get this feature in the Firefox 73 release on February 11, 2020 (which is much sooner than it seems).
How to test the new Firefox zoom settings in advance
Here’s how to find new settings in Firefox. I am assuming the process will be the same in the latest Firefox 73, but there may be slight differences.
- Download and install Firefox Nightly , then open a new browser window.
- Go to Menu> Settings> General. (or go to about: preferences using the address bar).
- In the Settings menu, scroll down to the subtitle “Zoom”, then click the drop-down list next to “Default Zoom” to select the desired level (can be from 30 to 300 percent).
- If you want to apply these changes only to text displayed on websites, select the Scale Text Only check box.
- These changes will apply to all websites and browser settings pages that you visit in Firefox. You can still use the zoom hotkey to further customize the site’s zoom if you need to, and Firefox will remember this change.
