10 Life Hacks Every TikTok User Should Know

TikTok is a captivating, addictive app full of hidden features that can make it much more enjoyable, not to mention safer. However, despite all its charms, TikTok is a privacy nightmare. Ownership of the app recently shifted from the Chinese company ByteDance to TikTok USDS Joint Venture, a new entity backed by Oracle’s Larry Ellison, private equity firm Silver Lake, and UAE-based investment firm MGX. This change raised quite a few questions when it was announced in January 2026 and might make you think twice about how the app uses your data.
When it comes to hacking your TikTok feed, you probably already know the basics: adding automatic captions, holding the play button at 2x speed, or hitting the “Not Interested” button to nudge the algorithm. Let’s dive deeper and look at 10 TikTok hacks you might not know about.
There is a way to view your viewing history on TikTok.
Finding a TikTok video using the search bar is notoriously difficult. If you haven’t liked or saved a video, consider it lost forever… unless you use this little-known trick to view your viewing history. Go to the search bar in the ” For You” feed, type a period (.), and tap “Search.” You’ll see the option “View viewing history.” From here, you can even filter results by date if you remember roughly when you watched the video you’re looking for. It’s very convenient.
Press and hold the Share button to quickly send a TikTok video to your best friends.
Instead of scrolling through the entire Share menu, you can simply press and hold the Share button (arrow) while watching a video. Your four closest contacts will instantly appear, and you can send a message with a single tap. Note: TikTok’s understanding of who is in your “closest four” may surprise you, and the company isn’t entirely transparent about how it determines who is considered one of your closest contacts.
Enable transparency mode in TikTok for a more comfortable viewing experience.
To remove like buttons, comment icons, and other UI from a video, hold your finger on the screen while watching and select “Clear Screen.” Alternatively, pinch two fingers together and then spread them slightly apart to switch to the same mode. Tap X or swipe to the next video to exit clear mode. This trick is especially useful for taking screenshots or when you want to get a better look at a video without being distracted by the interface.
React with emoji on TikTok without opening the comments.
Tap and hold the comment field to quickly send an emoji reaction without opening the entire comment section. It’s faster, though I think the comment section is crucial to the full TikTok experience. Comments contain some of the best content on the internet.
Reset your TikTok For You feed algorithm.
Stuck in a content rut? TikTok offers a way to clear your feed and start fresh:
-
Click “Profile” in the lower right corner.
-
Click on the three-line menu (in the upper right corner).
-
Go to Settings and Privacy .
-
Select content options
-
Click “Update” in the “For You” feed.
-
Click Continue to confirm.
Your news feed will be filled with new, more diverse, and less personalized content.
Save a TikTok video as a Live Photo for your iPhone’s lock screen.
Do you love a video so much that you want to watch it every time you lock your phone? Or do you want to prank a friend who left their phone in your hands? On your iPhone, open any TikTok video, tap the Share icon (arrow), and select Live Photo in the bottom row. The video will be saved to the Photos app. Then, use it as your lock screen wallpaper:
-
Open a Live Photo in the Photos app on your iPhone.
-
Click Share → Use as Wallpaper
-
Or go to Settings → Wallpaper → Choose new wallpaper and select one from your library.
Press and hold the lock screen button, and your TikTok video will play as a Live Photo. This is useful if you really, really love fan-made video montages of your favorite character.
Opt out of TikTok data collection
TikTok collects a huge amount of data . If you plan to use this app, it’s nearly impossible to completely avoid this privacy nightmare. However, you can limit its data usage in the settings:
-
Turn off targeted ads outside of TikTok.
-
Disable the use of off-TikTok activity for ad targeting.
-
Disable location tracking in the app.
-
Stop syncing contacts
You can also go to your phone’s system settings → TikTok and revoke location permissions at the operating system level. This is usually a more reliable method than relying on the app’s built-in settings.
Prevent TikTok from recommending your account to other users.
There are two layers of protection here, and you need both: in TikTok’s settings, you should disable syncing of contacts and Facebook friends. But the real life hack is to also go to your phone’s settings and completely revoke TikTok’s permission to access contacts. Otherwise, TikTok can still match your account with people who have your phone number saved, even with in-app sync disabled.
Use hidden hashtags to reach the right audience.
Ready to post something yourself? Hashtags tell TikTok’s algorithm what your video is about, but a solid string of hashtags in your caption looks sloppy and can even confuse the algorithm. But there are two more elegant ways to get around this:
-
Use SEO-optimized terms, reduce their size, and hide them off-screen in the subtitle editor.
-
Post your video and then immediately add the hashtags in your first comment.
Whichever method you choose, use 3-5 hashtags directly related to your content, combining specific, general, and popular tags. More isn’t always better, as it can dilute your content.
Increase your engagement.
The secret to engaging your audience is to be genuinely engaging and reciprocate. For example, replying to comments with videos increases reach more than simply writing a reply. But to ensure your content initially generates comments, use the rule of three hooks to keep viewers engaged beyond the first second:
-
A captivating text element. Place descriptive text on the screen that clearly explains to viewers what the video is about.
-
Verbal hook. In your narration or introduction, explain why they should stay.
-
Visual Crack. Create something visually compelling right away. Always start with the most compelling shots, even if you’re going back through previous shots chronologically.
Finally, using trends really helps, but I promise you don’t have to dance to popular tunes—just add a popular song to the background of what you’re already filming to take advantage of its algorithmic advantage.
