WhatsApp Now Allows You to Share Your Group Message History With New Members.

From coordinating travel to organizing yard sales, WhatsApp groups are at the center of all sorts of events in people’s daily lives. As someone who belongs to way too many WhatsApp groups, I’ve always been extremely annoyed by the app’s inability to share group chat history with new members. Leading up to my last meditation retreat, admins sent the same document seven (!) times simply because new members kept joining the group and they couldn’t access previously sent attachments. Fortunately, WhatsApp is finally changing that.
WhatsApp is finally adding a “Group Message History” feature, allowing group admins and members to share recent messages with new members. Now, when adding new members to a WhatsApp group, you can allow them access to the 100 most recent messages sent to other members of the group chat, which should be enough to prevent spamming the group with the same messages when adding new members.
For me personally, this will be a huge quality of life improvement. To help new group chat members feel more comfortable, I used to do everything from forwarding all important messages to sending them screenshots of all our previous conversations. It was incredibly tedious, and thankfully, I don’t have to do it anymore.
I also like the idea of limiting the number of recent messages for new group members to 100. Quite often, my WhatsApp groups start with a small number of people who know each other very well, and then the group expands to include acquaintances. The dynamics of a group chat change significantly with the addition of new members, and not everyone is comfortable with the idea of a stranger seeing messages sent in a more intimate group. Limiting the chat history is a great step, allowing people to maintain some privacy, as opposed to sharing the entire group chat history with every new member.
However, if 100 messages seems like too much of an invasion of privacy, WhatsApp also says administrators can disable this feature for regular users. This means only administrators will be able to share chat history with new users.
The company says all group chat members will be notified when a new member is granted access to their chat history, so you won’t be caught off guard if a new group member starts mentioning jokes they used a few days ago.
WhatsApp says it’s gradually rolling out this feature globally, so you can expect it to be available on your device in the coming weeks.
