12 TV Shows Like the Beast in Me You Should Watch Next

Claire Danes plays grieving mother and writer Aggie Wiggs; struggling to write her next book, she decides to dedicate it to her neighbor—an obvious idea, especially since he was accused of murdering his first wife. What could go wrong? Matthew Rhys plays Niall Jarvis, a neighbor and possible murderer who becomes embroiled in the story when Abby’s tale reveals much more than just a single death. You canwatch The Beast in Me on Netflix , then check out other shows about deadly secrets, vile lies, and incredibly bad decisions.
Girlfriend (2025 – )
In a similarly paranoid vein, Robin Wright plays Laura Sanderson, a wealthy London art gallery owner, in Girlfriend . Her son (Laurie Davidson) brings home a new working-class girlfriend, Cherry Lane (Olivia Cooke), who immediately strikes Laura as unusual. But is there more to it? Can anyone named “Cherry Lane” really be trusted? Something is definitely off, and we’re left wondering if this is a story about a dangerous con man or an overbearing mother—or perhaps both. The series premiered as a miniseries, but there’s interest in continuing the story, so a second season is currently on the table. Watch Girlfriend on Prime Video .
Surface (2022 – )
These shows often explore the question of how much women can trust their own instincts—this one cuts to the heart of the matter in the story of Sophie Ellis (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who survives an apparent suicide attempt and discovers she’s lost vast chunks of her memory. She returns to life with her husband, only to discover she’s been having an affair. And that her husband may have embezzled money, among other things, though it all hinges on how much she can trust the men in her life and her own fragmented memories, questions that lead her to adopt a completely new identity and try to figure things out. Lie to Me Once (2024)
Based on the novel by Harlan Coben, Lie to Me Once is more of a political thriller, but the tone is broadly similar: Michelle Keegan plays Maya Stern, a former special forces pilot who investigates the murder of her husband, whom she then catches playing with their daughter on video. The mystery unravels, intertwined with the earlier death of her sister, and leads to a tangled web of events involving her husband’s family and a shady pharmaceutical company.Watch Lie to Me Once on Netflix .
Disclaimer (2024)
Created, written, and directed by four-time Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón, Disclaimer boasts the most impressive pedigree one could wish for in a streaming television series. It stars Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline (both Oscar winners, by the way), along with Sacha Baron Cohen and Leila George. Blanchett plays Katherine Ravenscroft, an award-winning journalist who receives a mysterious manuscript—a novel in which she herself appears to be the protagonist and which reveals secrets from her past she thought long buried. Sharp Objects (2018)
A writer looking for a new story that will lead her into danger and betrayal? Check. In this adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel, Amy Adams plays Camille Preaker, a troubled journalist with a drug addiction recently released from a psychiatric hospital. I’m not sure what part of recovery involves returning to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri, to investigate the murder of one girl and the seemingly related disappearance of another—all under the watchful, critical eye of her socialite mother, Adora (Patricia Clarkson). Watch Sharp Objects on HBO Max .
His and Hers (2026)
“His & Hers” is the first of at least three Alice Feeney thrillers to be adapted into streaming series. It’s a gripping and, crucially, twist-filled mystery starring Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal. Thompson plays Annie Andrews, a former journalist who decides to return to work after learning of a murder in her Georgia hometown. Bernthal is the local detective working the case, and—surprise!—he’s also her ex. Can she trust him? Things are sure to get very personal.Watch “His & Hers” on Netflix .
Road to the Cemetery (2025 – )
The genre here differs somewhat from The Beast in Me —it’s more of a detective story with spy elements. However, the similarity lies in the protagonist: a woman who plunges into a mystery, unaware of how deep, dark, and personal the events will become. Ruth Wilson plays Sarah Trafford, a married art restorer who no one takes seriously (including her husband), even after she becomes interested in the fate of a young girl whose family is killed in a (presumably) accidental gas explosion nearby. Emma Thompson plays private investigator Zoe Boehm, a wild-life, heavy drinker who becomes involved in a case against her will. An orphan girl disappears, and no one seems to care until Sarah hires Zoe and her husband to investigate. Both women soon realize they’re in a very difficult situation, as the missing girl points to a much larger conspiracy. Watch Down Cemetery Road on Apple TV+ .
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Any psychological thriller worth its salt will struggle—unexpected plot twists are a staple of all such series. But Behind Her Eyes is a series whose climax is so insane you’ll either applaud its audacity or chuckle at its absurdity. Louise (Simona Brown) is a single mother who begins an affair with her boss—and his wife. Then, after a mysterious death, she begins a relationship with his former lover. Everything revolves around an increasingly complex relationship before things get truly wild.Watch Behind Her Eyes on Netflix .
Destruction (2020)
David E. Kelley brings us this twisting psychological drama (adapted from Jean Hanff Korelitz’s bestselling novel “You Should Have Known “), starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Fraser, a Manhattan psychologist married to oncologist Jonathan (Hugh Grant). She constantly encounters a woman named Elena, whose increasingly erratic behavior worries Grace, especially after the woman’s murder. However, the situation becomes truly unsettling when she attempts to contact the missing Jonathan, leading her into a web of secrets and lies that are all too close to her own life. Watch “Unravelling” on HBO Max .
Choke (2021–2023)
The clever and gripping film “Choke” begins with the discovery of a dead body on a beach and then flashes back in time to Val’s (Dervla Kirwan) 50th birthday party, hosted by her husband, Denis. The celebration takes an unexpected turn when Denis announces in front of their children and numerous guests that he and Val are divorcing and that she will be moving in with her much younger boyfriend, whom Denis indirectly threatens. Naturally, it is Denis’s body we saw earlier, and while many have their own motives, Val is determined to get to the bottom of it. Watch “Choke” on Peacock.
Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials (2026–)
Perhaps there’s a bit of a contrast here, as we’re transported back to the Jazz Age for an Agatha Christie-style detective story. And yet! Mia McKenna-Bruce’s Bundle Brent has a lot in common with the modern women in the rest of the series: she’s smart, curious, and surrounded by men (mostly) who try to manipulate her. Bundle lives with her mother (Helena Bonham-Carter) in a decaying mansion, which they rent out to pay the bills. A party thrown by a steel magnate ends with the death of one of the guests—a friend who’s been hinting all evening that he’s going to propose to Bundle, but who, according to the police and virtually everyone else, has committed suicide. All that’s left is to move on. She doesn’t, of course, and convinces Christie’s regular character, Superintendent Battle (Martin Freeman), that there might be more to it, especially when events begin to echo her father’s death all those years ago.Watch Agatha Christie’s The Seven Dials on Netflix.
The Last Thing He Said to Me (2023 – )
Jennifer Garner plays Hannah Hall, a successful woodturner (I learned that’s a real thing), who tries to mend her relationship with her stepdaughter to help solve the mystery of her husband’s disappearance. The first season of the standalone series became Apple’s most-watched miniseries ever, so we’re getting a second season based on another bestselling novel by Laura Dave.
