This Shortcut Solves the Biggest Problem With Finding Messages on Your IPhone.

I’ve always been frustrated with searching in Apple’s Messages app. Sure, things have improved in recent years, especially with the addition of search filters , but my main gripe remains: searching in Messages can be slow and difficult, especially if you’re looking for a specific message. If you’re experiencing the same issue, I have good news: I’ve found a workaround that significantly improves Apple’s built-in search feature.

Problem with searching in messages.

For most users, the easiest way to search text messages on iPhone is to open the Messages app, tap the search bar at the bottom of the screen, and type what you’re looking for. You’ll get a ton of results, but that’s the problem: there’s just too much information.

For example, when I search for a person’s name, the Messages app in iOS 26 shows a list of four chats where that name is mentioned, followed by two chat threads, pinned chats, shared notes, links, photos, locations, and documents. This is great for more detailed searching, but when I only need to find a specific message, these extra details just get in the way.

This is where our life hack comes in handy. First, open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone, then set up the “Search and Open Messages” shortcut. This shortcut leverages the features introduced in iOS 26, allowing you to search for text messages and open them with a single tap. Once set up, you can launch it from the Shortcuts app or add it to your iPhone’s Home screen for easy access.

What do you think at the moment?

This keyboard shortcut prompts you to type what you’re looking for and almost instantly displays all chats containing those words. In some cases, it will even highlight the exact sentence containing those words. It will also find keywords in images you share: they appear as “blank” in the search results, but if you scroll through them, you’ll see the image that was found in the search.

As soon as you tap a result, the shortcut will instantly take you to the corresponding section of the chat, eliminating the need to scroll through hundreds of results to find the one you need. This is exactly the kind of functionality Apple needs to add directly to Messages. But for now, this shortcut-based workaround will have to do.
