How to Access T-Mobile’s Free Real-Time Translation Beta
Real-time translation is perhaps the most useful innovation to emerge from the AI boom, but using it during a phone call typically requires a dedicated device or a separate app . T-Mobile is aiming to change that. Today, the carrier announced the imminent rollout of real-time translation on all phones connected to its 5G or 4G networks. To use it, you’ll need to sign up for the beta testing now.
According to a press release sent to journalists today, the new feature will be automatically activated once selected, regardless of the app or device being used. To access it, simply dial “87” on the keypad during a phone call. This means it will also be compatible with regular phones , meaning classic flip phones with physical buttons.
How T-Mobile’s Real-Time Translation Feature Works
The device you use doesn’t matter, as all the translation calculations will happen on T-Mobile’s end, not on your device. The downside is that you won’t be able to choose which AI model will be used for translation, and T-Mobile hasn’t yet provided any details about which model it will use. You’ll also have to trust T-Mobile’s servers with any audio recording of your conversation. T-Mobile spokesperson Mason Miller told Lifehacker affiliate PCMag via email that “[T-Mobile] does not store call recordings or transcripts,” but the company will certainly have to process your data on its servers at some point for this feature to work. By comparison, competing translation apps often rely on downloaded language packs and models built into the device.
Still, I understand why T-Mobile offers this service: when real-time translation is limited to certain devices or apps, it significantly reduces its usability, as both parties must have a compatible device for it to work. Processing the translation in the cloud increases the likelihood that you’ll be able to use it exactly when you need it—and as a bonus, it only requires one of you to be on T-Mobile’s 5G or 4G network.
While T-Mobile’s press release focused on 5G, the carrier confirmed to The Verge earlier today that the feature is also available on 4G networks. The Verge also reports that, in addition to dialing 87, beta testers will eventually be able to activate real-time translation by saying “Hey, T-Mobile” instead.
When will T-Mobile’s online money transfer feature launch?
T-Mobile’s real-time translation feature will begin testing “for select users” this spring, with a broader rollout planned “later this year.” The feature will be free during beta testing, though additional fees may apply once it’s widely rolled out. “We’ll share more details about pricing and plans closer to the commercial launch,” Miller told PCMag.
