Top 10 Movies Available to Watch Online This Month.

January is known for the sheer number of movies dumped on theaters, but that’s certainly not the case for streaming services, as apps begin loading up with the past year’s hits, both critical and commercial, and 2026 couldn’t have started off better, with the best-to-stream list filling up with hit after hit, from “One Fight for Another” to “The Sinners” and “Fort 1.”

January’s streaming service winners are loaded with social commentary. “One Battle After Another” is a gripping contemporary film about anti-fascist revolutionaries and anti-immigrant raids, while “The Sinners,” “Bugonia,” and “28 Years Later” use sci-fi and horror tropes to comment on current political divisions. If all that sounds too serious, the list is rounded out by entertaining films like “Fort 1” and “The Break.”

It’s also worth noting: the popularity of The Running Man and The Long Walk suggests that audiences are hungry for adaptations of Stephen King’s dystopian novels, written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, which focus on near-future authoritarian societies where deadly speed races are popular. What does this mean?

One Battle After Another (2025)

This month, Paul Thomas Anderson’s subtle, intelligent thriller about resistance and race in a fascist, anti-immigration United States topped the charts. (No, it’s not a documentary.) Featuring superb performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, and Regina Hall, One Battle at a Time is a rare film that’s both thoughtful and gripping. It was recently nominated for 13 Academy Awards. Watch One Battle at a Time on HBO Max.

Bugonia (2025)

It’s always nice when a weird movie has widespread appeal, and Bugonia was just that in January 2026. Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis play a pair of misfits who kidnap a powerful pharmaceutical executive (Emma Stone) because they believe she’s an alien. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who made the excellent 2023 film Poor Things , the Oscar-nominated film for Best Picture is a must-see, even if you’re a little weird. (And if you’re looking for even more weirdness, the film is based on an even weirder South Korean film called Save the Green Planet .) Stream Bugonia on Peacock .

Sinners (2025)

This unique film so skillfully blends a variety of styles that it has practically become a genre unto itself. A historical drama-musical-horror story with elements of romance and drama, it explores racial and historical prejudices in the United States. “The Sinners” tells its story through both song and vampire-involved violence. The film is absolutely flawless in every cinematic aspect, which likely explains its record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations. Watch “The Sinners” on HBO Max and Prime Video .

The Running Man (2025)

Based on the 1982 novel by Stephen King (writing under the pseudonym Richard Bachman) and directed by Edgar Wright, The Running Man is a dystopian sci-fi action film set in a near-future where the most popular television show is a deadly reality show where contestants must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional killers. I hate to admit it, but I would love to watch that show, and you should definitely watch the movie. Watch The Running Man on MGM+ and Paramount+ .

The Break (2026)

If you’re looking for a retro-style action thriller, check out Joe Carnahan’s The Rip. It tells the story of a Miami drug enforcement task force that discovers $20 million in dirty cash in a stash. No one on the team is a clean cop with that much money at stake, and things soon go predictably wrong, and in completely unpredictable ways. Starring fellow actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, The Rip is a gripping action thriller.Watch The Rip on Netflix .

Train Dreams (2025)

If you’re looking for maximum drama in the style of American classics, but without excessive sentimentality, watch “Train Dreams.” Set in the early 1900s, the film tells the story of Robert Granier (Joel Edgerton), a lumberjack and railroad builder whose quiet life is turned upside down by a terrible tragedy. “Train Dreams” is a thoughtful, poetic film about the passing of an era. It’s also nominated for Best Picture this year.Watch “Train Dreams” on Netflix.

Wake Up Dead: A Knives Out Mystery (2025)

In the third film in the Knives Out series, Daniel Craig plays Benoit Blanc, the last of the gentleman detectives, who this time investigates the murder of a priest. A stylish, twisty, and mind-bending mystery featuring an all-star cast including Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, and Jeremy Renner, Wake Up Dead is proof that classic detective fiction can still keep even the most seasoned mystery fans on their toes. The Long Way (2025)

The second film in this month’s top 10, based on a Stephen King novel but written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, The Long Walk bears only superficial similarities to The Running Man in its story of a group of young people living in a dystopian future society who are forced to participate in a deadly competition that requires them to keep walking until only one remains (and alive). It’s an ensemble character study, closer to They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? than the over-the-top sci-fi action flick The Running Man . (Though they’d make a great pairing.) The Long Walk is available to stream on Starz or rent on Prime Video .

28 years later (2025)

Zombies deteriorate if left outdoors for too long, and these dead have been languishing there for nearly 30 years. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s 28 Years Later eschews the fast-paced chaos of modern zombie films for an atmospheric, captivating exploration of a community still living in a long-dead England. It’s a grim post-apocalypse film that makes you wonder if life is better for the zombies.Watch 28 Years Later on Netflix or rent it on Prime Video .

F1 (2025)

I’m glad this list of dark zombie stories, carefully constructed detective plots, and thinly veiled cultural critiques concludes with a movie about cars going really, really fast. (Sometimes you just need a break.) In Fort 1 , nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, Brad Pitt plays a racing driver seeking one last shot at glory. Shot on actual Formula 1 Grand Prix circuits, the film perfectly captures the danger, drama, and pure adrenaline of the sport. It’s a great movie to show off your new TV and soundbar.
