12 TV Shows Like ‘His & Hers’ You Should Watch Next

His & Hers is the first in Alice Feeney’s trilogy, adapted into a series for streaming platforms. It’s a fast-paced, gripping, and, perhaps most importantly, full of unexpected twists and turns, Netflix’s detective series stars Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal. Thompson plays Annie Andrews, a former journalist who decides to return to work after learning of a murder in her Georgia hometown. Bernthal is the local detective leading the case—and, surprise!—her ex.
“His & Hers” is a huge Netflix hit, and a particularly popular and easy-to-watch series. If you’re craving something similar after watching the latest episode, here are a dozen more series with intricate plots, complex families, and women who are much more than just victims.
Murders in Åre (2025)
The Scandinavian police drama (or, if you prefer, Nordic noir) is a subgenre in its own right, so prevalent that the Disney+ series “Always There Agatha” featured an episode parodying it. Certainly, “The Åre Murders” proves that the Swedes know what murder is. Straightforward, troubled (meaning, suspended) detective Hanna Ahlander leaves Stockholm to spend time with her sister in remote Åre. A missing-girl case brings her back to work, and she finds herself confronting local cop Daniel Lindskog, whom she’s hesitant to trust. The dynamic isn’t entirely dissimilar to that of reporter Anna Andrews and her ex-cop in “His & Hers.” Looking for a darkly beautiful landscape and ambiguous morals? Åre might be just the place for you.“The Åre Murders” is available to stream on Netflix .
Sharp Objects (2018)
In this adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel, Amy Adams plays Camille Preaker, a troubled journalist with a drug addiction recently released from a psychiatric hospital. I’m not sure what part of recovery involves returning to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri, to investigate the murder of one girl and the seemingly related disappearance of another—all under the watchful and critical eye of her socialite mother, Adora (Patricia Clarkson). Like His & Hers , the plot contains several unexpected twists. Watch Sharp Objects on HBO Max .
Easttown Mare (2021)
Kate Winslet won an Emmy for her portrayal of the troubled Mare Sheehan, a local heroine in her high school days and a basketball champion whose reputation is rapidly fading in adulthood. As a police detective, she can’t solve the case of a missing girl, even when confronted with the recently murdered teenage mother—you probably won’t be surprised to learn that the cases are connected. A second season is rumored to be in the works . Watch Mare of Easttown on HBO Max.
The Beast in Me (2025)
In this gripping thriller full of unexpected twists, Claire Danes plays grieving mother and writer Aggie Wiggs, who struggles to write her next book and decides to dedicate it to her neighbor, accused of murdering his first wife. What could go wrong? Matthew Rhys plays Niall Jarvis, a neighbor and possible murderer who becomes embroiled in the story when Abby’s tale reveals much more than just a single death.Watch The Beast in Me on Netflix .
Apples Never Fall (2024)
Liane Moriarty’s novels have been successfully adapted into films, from HBO’s Big Little Lies to Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers . Her work in general, and Apples Never Fall in particular, leans more toward mystery than thriller, but it’s the twisted plotlines that draw us in. This miniseries follows the Delaney family, four siblings forced to confront their family’s dark history after the disappearance of their mother, Joy (Annette Bening), a disappearance in which their father, Stand (Sam Neill), is a suspect. Watch Apples Never Fall on Peacock .
Road to the Cemetery (2025 – )
While this film leans slightly more toward the spy genre than His & Hers (it’s based on the novel series by Mick Herron, author of Slow Horses ), it’s still a gripping mystery with a pair of very different partners at the center of the plot. Emma Thompson stars as private investigator Zoe Boehm, a wild-life, hard-drinking woman who is hired by Sarah Trafford, a married art restorer played by Ruth Wilson. No one takes her seriously (including her husband), even after she begins investigating the fate of a girl whose family is killed in a seemingly accidental gas explosion nearby. The orphan girl disappears, and no one seems to care until Sarah hires Zoe and her husband to look into it. The two women soon realize they’re in a very complicated situation, as the missing girl points to a much larger conspiracy. Watch Down Cemetery Road on Apple TV+ .
The Crystal Cuckoo (2025)
Clara Merlo (Catalina Sopelana) is a resident physician at a major city hospital. During one of her shifts, she passes out and awakens weeks later to learn that her heart has failed and she’s needed a transplant. Although donors are anonymous, she decides she really needs to know about the person whose heart she’s carrying—and that’s where the question begins: “What could go wrong?” She manages to trace the donor to a family in the small town of Yesquez, where she learns that her donor’s father disappeared years ago and his brother, Juan (Alfonso Nieto), has joined the police. And that’s a good thing: she’ll need his help when she becomes embroiled in a mystery that’s been going on for twenty years.Watch “The Crystal Cuckoo” on Netflix .
The Last Thing He Said to Me (2023 – )
The first season became Apple’s most-watched miniseries ever, so it’s no surprise we’re getting a second season, based on another bestselling novel by Laura Dave. Jennifer Garner plays Hannah Hall, a successful woodturner (wow, a new genre in crime thrillers!) who tries to build a relationship with her stepdaughter to help solve the mystery of her husband’s disappearance. Watch “The Last Thing He Told Me” on Apple TV+ .
Frog (2024)
After his wife’s death, Yeon-ha (Kim Yun-seok) simply wants a quiet life in the secluded town where he lives, though he’s not particularly enthusiastic about it. All is well until a young woman shows up in a nearby rented apartment with her son, then suddenly disappears, leaving behind bloodstains and, even more disturbingly, a child. This leisurely, cinematic thriller has a narrative structure that would be a spoiler to reveal too much, but solving the mysteries is definitely rewarding.Watch “Frog” on Netflix .
When No One Sees Us (2025 – )
An original police thriller borrowed from Spain, When No One Sees Us tells the story of Cuban-American U.S. Army Special Agent Mariela Garriga ( Mission: Impossible – Time Attack ) and Spanish Civil Guard Sergeant Maribel Verdú ( Pan’s Labyrinth ), who struggle with a complicated family life. The two investigate a suspected suicide at an airbase during Holy Week. It’s another complex mystery, but the performances and emphasis on character over plot make it stand out. Watch When No One Sees Us on HBO Max .
Disclaimer (2024)
Created, written, and directed by four-time Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón, Disclaimer boasts the most impressive pedigree one could wish for in a streaming television series. It stars Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline (both Oscar winners, by the way), along with Sacha Baron Cohen and Leila George. Blanchett plays Katherine Ravenscroft, an award-winning journalist who receives a mysterious manuscript—a novel in which she herself appears to be the protagonist and which reveals secrets from her past she thought long buried. Watch Disclaimer on Apple TV+ .
True Detective: Night Country (2024)
Each of True Detective’s four seasons has its own unique twist, but “Night Country” departs from the sweaty, macho atmosphere of the earlier seasons, offering a much more chilling mystery involving missing scientists at a research station near a tiny Alaskan town, where darkness and cold are practically characters in themselves. The resulting detective story involves seasoned police chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Private Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reyes), two women with complicated pasts and tangled family lives in the present. The resolution of this twisting mystery has generated much controversy, but the acting and chilling sense of magical realism are top-notch. Watch “True Detective: Night Country” on HBO Max .
