Why TikTok Users Are Injecting Salmon Sperm Into Their Faces.

Scroll through TikTok or Instagram, and you’ll see bloggers swearing by unconventional treatments, posting stunning before-and-after photos and raving about their rejuvenated skin. And what’s the hottest skincare trend right now? Salmon sperm. Yep.

With the new year just around the corner—perfect time for beauty resolutions!—more and more people are searching for “salmon sperm face masks.” Before you conjure up anything suspicious (pun intended), understand that people aren’t actually slathering their faces with pure salmon sperm. The secret ingredient is a substance called PDRN, or polydeoxyribonucleotide, a compound extracted from salmon DNA. So what is this secret ingredient, and is it really the next frontier in anti-aging skincare?

The scientific basis for the hype

PDRN isn’t exactly quackery; this compound has legitimate clinical evidence for its regenerative properties. Research shows that PDRN can stimulate tissue repair, promote collagen production, and improve skin elasticity by activating adenosine receptors in cells. Several sources claim it has been used medicinally since the 1980s in Italy and South Korea. Whatever its true origins, PDRN has gradually made its way into traditional skincare.

The procedure typically involves a series of microinjections administered directly into the skin, similar to mesotherapy or microneedling. However, in the US, PDRN is only approved for topical use, as the FDA classifies it as a cosmetic product, not a drug. Proponents claim it can reduce fine wrinkles, improve skin texture, minimize scars, and create an overall more youthful appearance. Unlike other cosmetic procedures that simply fill or temporarily plump the skin, PDRN is said to actually stimulate the skin’s natural healing processes. But, as always, there’s a significant gap between reality and what you see online.

Reality check

Social media thrives on transformation stories, and skincare content is no exception. Algorithms favor dramatic results, pushing content creators to highlight stunning results while downplaying less appealing details—like the fact that some say these injections can be quite painful. “While PDRN has credible clinical data supporting skin repair and regeneration,” says Dr. Claudia Kim , “viral content often exaggerates the results and glosses over who is—and isn’t—a good candidate. Context and medical supervision matter.” As for the injections themselves, these procedures can cause temporary swelling and bruising. At a minimum, multiple sessions may be required to see results.

What do you think at the moment?

Again, if you’re in the US and are being sent a syringe of salmon sperm, it may be a non-FDA-approved product. This means its purity, safety, and effectiveness are not regulated. As with any medical aesthetic procedure, you shouldn’t sign up for PDRN treatments without careful consideration—consideration that goes beyond the promise of improved skin. Do you know what kind of salmon DNA treatment you’re signing up for? Is it an injection or, technically, microneedling? Are you choosing PDRN or PN (polynucleotides), a purer, more concentrated form of PDRN? To further confuse matters, these treatments can be called anything from “salmon facials” to “salmon sperm injections,” to “PDRN facials” to the brand name Rejuran . One thing is certain: as demand increases, so does the risk of the procedure being performed by unqualified professionals, which could potentially lead to complications or unsatisfactory results.

Result

The salmon sperm trend may seem strange, but it has a scientific basis. And when your favorite beauty blogger attributes her glowing skin to a certain procedure, it’s tempting to believe you can achieve the same results. Social media will always drive beauty trends, and there’s nothing wrong with being inspired by what you see online. But for the sake of your appearance and your safety, it’s important to understand the difference between a carefully orchestrated social media moment and the stark reality of medical aesthetic procedures.

If you’re interested in PDRN procedures after seeing them online, consult with a qualified dermatologist or licensed aesthetician. They can assess your suitability, explain realistic expectations, discuss potential side effects, and ensure the procedure is performed safely. As more advanced treatments become more accessible and visible online, don’t let TikTok influencers replace professional medical advice.
