When it comes to gaming monitors, an ultrawide curved screen takes gaming to the next level, providing a more immersive experience than a standard monitor. Unfortunately, this enhanced quality typically comes at a much higher price. However, there are budget monitors available at discounted prices, making upgrading your gaming rig much more affordable without breaking the bank. Samsung is currently selling its 34-inch Samsung Odyssey G5 for $279.99 (original price: $399.99).
The Samsung Odyssey G5 is an excellent ultrawide monitor for those new to such devices. It has all the necessary features and is relatively inexpensive. Other high-end, larger ultrawide monitors, such as the Odyssey OLED G9 , cost over $700. However, they are significantly larger and offer image quality comparable to OLED screens.
The Odyssey G5 monitor features a 1000R curved screen, which Samsung claims is optimal for preventing eye strain. Media content is displayed in a 21:9 aspect ratio and 3440×1440 resolution, meaning that when watching videos that aren’t compatible with this aspect ratio, there will be black space on the sides to prevent image distortion. The monitor also supports a 165Hz refresh rate and built-in FreeSync variable refresh rate (VRR) technology, making fast-paced games smoother. Input lag is 1ms, which is very fast for a budget gaming monitor. It’s also HDR10 compatible, so watching movies or TV shows will look great, but mostly in dark rooms, as HDR’s peak brightness isn’t very high.
