You Can Now Use Your MacBook Display As a Ring Light.

Sometimes you need a little more light during a video call, especially if you’re in a dimly lit room. The latest macOS update (26.2) offers a solution: you can use the edge of the screen as a ring light.

The feature that adds a rounded white rectangle to the screen is calledEdge Light . This rectangle takes up part of the screen but becomes partially transparent when you hover your mouse over it, allowing you to mostly use the computer as normal.

You can use this feature by clicking the camera icon in the menu bar during a call and turning on “Edge Lighting.” You can also adjust the brightness and color of the edge light here.

As you can see, the laptop itself barely illuminates me. Here’s what I look like with this feature enabled:

My face is much more visible now, but whether that’s a plus or a minus is a matter of taste. Try this feature if you find yourself on a video call in the dark. Please note that it’s only available on devices with Apple Silicon processors.
