The Sony 1000X series has been around since 2016, constantly improving on previous versions, culminating in the Sony WH-1000XM6 in 2025, which, according to my testing, is the best over-ear headphone of 2025 (and the best ever) . The WH-1000XM6 are currently available for $398 (originally $459.99), their lowest price ever, according to price tracking tools .
The XM6 headphones are an improved version of an already excellent set of headphones. Sony increased the number of microphones from eight to twelve compared to the XM5, improving not only your voice quality during calls. Microphones are used in virtually all features, such as active noise cancellation (ANC), adaptive sound control (Adaptive Sound Control), and ambient sound mode (Ambient Sound). They analyze your surroundings and adapt their functions accordingly. If you move from a noisy to a quiet room, the XM6 can switch from ANC mode to ambient sound mode (if Adaptive Sound Control is enabled).
These headphones have a ton of additional features that can be explored in the companion app. The sound quality is excellent, and the fully customizable equalizer offers plenty of options for achieving your desired sound. I really like the ability to see which codec you’re using in the app’s main menu. This eliminates the guesswork of knowing whether you’re getting the best sound quality. Battery life is 30 hours with active noise cancellation enabled and 40 hours with it disabled. There’s a 3.5mm AUX jack for wired connection, a welcome addition for audiophiles who still use an iPod Classic (or is that just me?).
The XM6 headphones aren’t just the best headphones of 2025, they’re also likely to remain the best for years to come. For $398, you get the best at a record-low price that we likely won’t see again for a long time.
