When Amazon released its first Kindle back in 2007, it ushered in a whole new direction in e-readers. But as technology has advanced, e-ink displays can now be used for more than just reading. Digital notebooks have also appeared, but, as you might expect, they tend to be slightly larger and significantly more expensive than e-readers. For example, a Kindle digital notebook has a 10.2-inch diagonal and typically costs well over $400 (though it’s currently on sale for Black Friday ).
That’s where the iFlyTek AiNote Air 2 comes in. This digital notepad is smaller, at just 8.2 inches, and thanks to a Black Friday deal, it’s now $399 (a $100 discount off the regular price). But unlike Scribe, it also comes with built-in access to ChatGPT (without a subscription) for AI features like translation and speech-to-text.
This makes it a bit more similar to the Viwoods AiPaper E Ink Notebook than to the Scribe or other competitors like the Remarkable Paper Pro . And that’s great news. Lifehacker editor Joel Cunningham gave the AiPaper 4/5 stars in his review, but it still won’t be for everyone: it has a large 10.65-inch screen and a suggested retail price of $549 (it’s also slightly discounted for Black Friday , but stock is selling out quickly).
Lifehacker hasn’t yet tested the AiNote Air 2, but in addition to its compact size and more affordable price, it also features a 5-megapixel camera, which could be useful when chatting on ChatGPT. It also has a speaker, so you don’t need headphones to listen to audiobooks . A stylus is also included.
However, beyond the improvements, there are also a few compromises. Storage is limited to 32 GB, and the battery is smaller than the AiPaper’s: 2600 mAh instead of 4100 mAh. The resolution is also slightly worse—293 PPI versus 300 PPI—but this may not be as noticeable on the smaller screen.
This is certainly a more standard version of the product, but the core functionality is present, and it could be a suitable, more compact, and affordable alternative for those looking to take digital notes with AI on the go. The device also received high praise on Reddit , where one user called it “the closest I’ve ever experienced to writing on a comfortable notepad with a smoothly rotating pen.”
