The Sony 1000X series has been around since 2016, improving on the previous version, and finally, in 2025, the Sony WH-1000XM6 model arrived, which became the best over-ear headphones I tested in 2025 (and ever) . Sony increased the number of microphones from eight to 12 compared to the XM5, improving not only call quality. They detect ambient sounds and adapt their functions accordingly. When moving from a noisy to a quiet room, the XM6 can switch from ANC to Aware mode (with Adaptive Sound Control enabled).
These headphones have a lot more features, which you can explore in their companion app. The sound quality is unmatched, and the fully customizable equalizer offers plenty of tweaks to tailor the sound to your tastes. I really like the ability to see which codec you’re listening to in the app’s main menu. This eliminates the guesswork of knowing whether you’re getting the best sound quality. They offer 30 hours of battery life with noise cancellation on and 40 hours with noise cancellation off. There’s a 3.5mm AUX jack for wired listening, which is a nice touch for audiophiles who still use iPod Classics (or is it just me?).
The XM6 aren’t just the best headphones of 2025, they’re likely to remain the best for years to come. For $398, you’ll get the best at a record-low price we likely won’t see again for a long time.
