I’m a historically Nintendo fan. My first consoles were Game Boys; my first games were Zelda and Link; and I was one of the few die-hard Wii U fans. (There were dozens! Dozens of us!) But I’ll admit, while Nintendo will always be my favorite platform, some of my favorite recent gaming experiences have been on PlayStation. The Last of Us absolutely blew me away; Astro Bot was everything I wanted from Super Mario Galaxy 3 ; and frankly, it’s just great to have a device that’s ready to play DVDs and Blu-rays whenever I want to watch something on disc .
Still, if you’re still considering buying a PlayStation 5, I highly recommend it. I’d recommend it without hesitation at full price, but when you can get it at a significant discount, it’s even better. Retailers like Amazon are currently selling the PS5 Slim Digital Edition for $399 , which is $100.99 off the $499.99 MSRP. While it’s not the lowest PS5 price ever, it’s still a great deal for what you get.
The Digital Edition PS5 Slim comes with one DualSense wireless controller, a 1TB SSD, and a copy of Astro’s Playroom . While the latter is just a demo of the PS5 hardware and DualSense controller, it’s still fun, and if you like it, please get Astro Bot ASAP. Speaking of games, however, this is a digital edition of the PS5. This means you’ll need to buy digital copies of all your games unless you buy a disc drive for an extra $79 . I wouldn’t recommend that route, though, as you can buy the PS5 Disc Edition right now for $449 , a mere $50 increase over the digital edition. If you think you’ll want to buy games on disc, which can be beneficial for both resale and used game buying, consider the Disc Edition instead. But if you’re looking to spend as little as possible on your PS5, you can buy the digital edition and use the savings to buy new games or even a PlayStation Plus subscription .
You could also go the opposite direction and spend even more on a PS5 Pro . Amazon is also offering a $100.99 discount on Sony’s top-of-the-line PlayStation, bringing its price down to $649. But unless you’re looking to play console games at the highest possible quality or watch Blu-ray movies in 4K resolution with HDR, the base PS5 is perfectly fine.
If you’re looking to save money, consider purchasing a refurbished console. Best Buy has a refurbished Digital Edition (not the Slim) for $341.99 . If you don’t mind buying a used device, you can save another almost $60 here.
