Black Friday is a great time for tech deals, but the discounted items are often last year’s models; it’s rare to find good deals on the latest and greatest devices and gadgets. Still, if you’re looking for one of those phone-shaped e-readers that all the cool kids are talking about on TikTok, you can save big right now on a device that was released just a month ago: the Viwoods AiPaper Reader, released November 10th , is now $238, $42 off its regular price.
The AiPaper Reader is a serious competitor to the more hyped Boox Palma family (which also has a new member , the Boox Palma 2 Pro , which isn’t available for sale until the holidays). It has the same 6.13-inch screen as most smartphones, but with a black-and-white e-ink display that’s much easier on the eyes than the bright OLED screen of your iPhone or Android. While it’s currently much cheaper than the Palma 2 Pro, the AiPaper Reader shares many of the same features, including 128GB of storage, Google Play compatibility, and mobile data when you insert a SIM card (though Viwoods’ device trumps the Boox: it’s also a secret phone ). It also has a ton of AI integrations, if that’s your thing (if you only want to use it for reading books from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other sources you enjoy, you can simply ignore it).
Currently, this is the most affordable e-reader in a phone form factor—it’s even cheaper than the Palma 2 ( $270 on Amazon ), released a year earlier, which doesn’t have mobile data but does have a temperature-controlled backlight, something the AiPaper Reader lacks. If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to stop spending so much time on your phone, a super-portable e-reader that fits in any pocket will be a great help.
