I Switched to a Titanium Hammer and It Was Worth the Money.

If you’re like most people, you bought a standard hammer/nail puller a long time ago without thinking about its weight or design. I was like that for a long time, but I noticed that whenever I worked on a project that required a lot of hammering, my hand quickly got tired, making the second half of the job a pain. Recently, I got a little confused about hammers—their different weights and types—and decided it was time to splurge and buy a titanium hammer (specifically, this one ). It was one of the best purchases I’ve made in a long time.

Titanium hammer vs. steel hammer

Most hammers are made of steel with fiberglass or wood handles. They do the job well—steel is a great hammer material, and it lasts a long time. I still have an old steel hammer that my dad passed down to me; it has a bent nail on the head to keep it from flying off, but it still works. Steel hammers are also quite inexpensive —this 16-ounce model from Estwing is only $25 at the time of writing. You simply can’t beat the price for a tool that will likely last for decades.

The problem with cheap steel hammers is the strain they put on your body. If you use a hammer once a year, you won’t even notice. But when I started doing housework regularly, I started to notice it: my hand would get tired, and my elbow and shoulder would ache slightly after just a few hours. Steel doesn’t absorb shock well, transmitting it to your hand. You can reduce this strain somewhat with anti-vibration pads or handles, but it will never completely disappear.

Tired of struggling with every project, I did some research and splurged on a 10-ounce (250-gram) titanium TiBone hammer. The Trimbone turned out to be absolutely amazing. The TiBone weighs only 250 grams, but because it’s titanium, it delivers the same striking power (the force transmitted to the nail) as a much heavier steel model. In other words, no matter how heavy a hammer you use, a titanium hammer will be much lighter. That means less weight and less strain on your hand.

The Trimbone has other advantages I like: the handle and head are easily replaceable, extending its life and making it more versatile for different tasks. It has a side nail gun and magnetic starter, and the handle is comfortable. But what I (and my shoulder) really like is its light weight without sacrificing performance. This hammer is primarily designed for framing, but I find it a great all-around tool for most jobs.

The main drawback is the price. It currently costs $370.49, which, as you can see, is almost 15 times more expensive than that excellent steel hammer I mentioned above. You might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere with a little effort, but it’s still an order of magnitude more expensive. For me, it was worth the money—since I bought it, I haven’t needed to take a ton of ibuprofen after a full day of work. If you’re also suffering from hand fatigue with your current hammer, it might be time to consider an upgrade.
