There’s a Bug in Microsoft’s Latest Windows Update That’s Making It Difficult to Fix Problems With Your PC.

If your computer is unstable, one of the diagnostic tools at your disposal is the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE). Windows RE offers a range of features to help you troubleshoot problems. With it, you can reset your computer, run automated diagnostics and repairs, adjust settings to determine which ones are causing the problem, remove previous updates that may be interfering with Windows, and restore your system from a previous Windows backup, among other useful features.
This is a necessary operating system feature, designed for situations where simply shutting down and restarting doesn’t restore the computer to normal operation. Therefore, it’s not ideal when Windows comes with a bug that disrupts not only part of the operating system, but also the part designed to fix computer problems.
As Tom’s Hardware discovered , a bug in the October Windows 11 update, KB5066835, makes it difficult to access the Windows Recovery Environment. The recovery environment can still be loaded, but you won’t be able to select any of the suggested computer recovery options. This is because the bug specifically disrupts USB devices in the Windows Recovery Environment. Simply put, your mouse and keyboard won’t work in the Windows Recovery Environment, making it impossible to navigate within the recovery environment.
This is obviously bad news for anyone looking to use Windows RE to fix a problem with their PC, including, ironically, this specific Windows RE bug. But you might think that as long as your specific Windows issue doesn’t prevent you from actually using your computer, you can get by without Windows RE for now. However, as Tom’s Hardware points out, it’s not that simple: when your PC fails to start, it automatically boots into the recovery environment. This is usually a good thing, as you have tools to diagnose and fix the problem. However, when Windows takes you to a screen where you can’t use your mouse and keyboard or interact with anything, you’re stuck.
The good news is that Microsoft is aware of this issue. The company has identified it as a known issue in Windows 11 version 25H2 and stated that it is working on releasing a fix “in the coming days.”
Windows also has other problems.
This month, Windows is experiencing this problem. The same October update also broke localhost , affecting all applications connecting to services running locally on your computer. (Thankfully, Microsoft released a fix for this bug.) Then, last week, the company officially ended support for Windows 10 , and while it still offers extended security updates to anyone willing to enroll their computer in the program, this puts the security of approximately half a billion PC users into question.
This Windows RE error is just the latest in a series of critical issues facing PC users. Hopefully, Microsoft’s next Windows 11 build will contain only fixes and no new bugs.
