When the latest iPad Air with the M3 chip launched in March, Lifehacker senior tech editor Jake Peterson cautioned against buying it , arguing that its advantages didn’t justify the higher price compared to the older model. But things have changed since then: the new iPad Air has dropped in price by $300, reaching its lowest point since its launch, according to price tracking tools . You can now get the 13-inch iPad Air M3 with 512GB of storage for $999.68 (original price: $1,249).
The M3 chip is more powerful than the M2 , and more power also means a longer lifespan for your iPad. Theoretically, you’ll also see more efficient multitasking, better performance for heavy apps, and faster overall speed. As Jake noted, the new iPad Air is one of Apple’s best tablets in terms of specs. The M3 chip supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, which means better lighting effects in games and graphically intensive apps. But other than the new chip, there’s little difference between it and the older M2 .
The iPad Air M3 features a 2360 x 1640 display with a 264 ppi density; a 12MP front-facing camera with a center lens (which tracks your facial movements); a 12MP wide-angle camera with flash, USB-C and Touch ID; and a battery that provides up to 10 hours of battery life depending on usage. Of course, you also get Apple Intelligence ( if that’s important to you ) , support for Apple Pencil , and the new Magic Keyboard .
If you already have an M2, there’s no reason to upgrade. For those looking for a more affordable iPad , the base model is now just $299 (originally $349), and for most, that’ll be enough. But if you want the most modern and powerful device, the iPad Air M3 is your best choice at the current reduced price.
