If you have a Spotify Premium Family subscription, we have good news for you: you can now set up managed accounts for your children. Not only will you be able to control what they listen to, but their music choices won’t affect or impact your listening history. Congratulations: you’ve got your Wrapped back.
On Tuesday, Spotify announced the launch of managed accounts for Premium subscribers in seven new regions: the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Premium Family subscribers in these countries can now create managed accounts for users under 13, allowing them to listen to music independently in a controlled environment.
Managed accounts are music-only, so young listeners can’t view other Spotify offerings, such as podcasts, or send or receive private messages . Additionally, account managers can manage a number of account settings, including the ability to listen to adult music, block certain artists and songs, and hide videos, including short-form Canvas content.
While Spotify already has a service for children, Spotify Kids , it’s significantly different from others in that it only features music curated specifically for the service and doesn’t allow subscribers to manage their accounts. Managed accounts allow subscribers to give their children full access to Spotify while maintaining full control over what they listen to.
Personally, I think this is a fantastic feature. As someone who grew up in the early days of iTunes, I’d love to be able to add any songs I want to my playlists—provided my parents allow it, of course. It’s also great that kids can get new music recommendations from Spotify. If they’re into the latest trends, Spotify might be able to recommend similar tracks, both modern and classic. This could be a great way to expand kids’ musical tastes.
Spotify has launched managed accounts in 10 additional countries: New Zealand, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia. The feature is now available as part of the Premium Family plan, priced at $19.99 per month.
How to create a managed account
If you’re using the Spotify mobile app, go to “Settings & Privacy” > “Account” > “Family Premium Plan .” On the account page on the Spotify website, select “Manage Members.” Either way, in the “Plan Members” section, choose whether to add members to your plan. Select “Add a listener under 13,” then “Add Account.”
Then follow the on-screen instructions to confirm that you are the listener’s parent or guardian; set a PIN to manage the process; select the listener’s name and date of birth; and select settings.
