New to Prime Day? We’ve got everything you need to get started . Sales information is accurate at the time of publication, but prices and stock levels are subject to change.
I got my first e-reader about 15 years ago—a Kindle. Since then, I’ve used devices and apps from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo, building my sparse e-book library along the way. I recently reviewed a whole bunch of e-ink devices for Lifehacker . All of this means I can confidently say the Boox Palma 2 is my favorite e-reader, its only drawback being the price.
This phone-shaped e-reader from Chinese tech company Onyx International fits easily in my jeans pocket next to my iPhone. I carry it with me when I go out, and over the past year, it’s helped me scroll less and read more. It has a crisp, backlit e-ink screen, almost as good as the Kindle Paperwhite, but it stands out thanks to its open Android operating system, which lets you download any app from the Google Play store, meaning you can access books from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Audible, Audiobooks.com, and even graphic novel and manga subscriptions like Shonen Jump—all on one device.
The 300 ppi screen resolution and relatively high refresh rate also make it possible to use office apps like Slack, Gmail, and Google Docs ( add a Bluetooth keyboard and you have a super-portable, distraction-free writing device ); browse the web with virtually no lag; or even play games and watch videos. Of course, no e-ink screen will look as sharp or move as smoothly as an LED one, but that’s the point: a grayscale display is easier on the eyes and reduces the need to get used to the device, so you use it purposefully rather than mindlessly scrolling.
In short, it’s everything I wanted in an e-reader, but at a price: after President Trump announced tariffs on Chinese products earlier this year, the Palma 2’s price jumped from $280 to $300—$100 more than Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. But, oddly enough, thanks to Amazon’s Prime Day sale in October, you can now get it at a discount.
The Palm 2 is rarely sold at a discount.
Of course, $300 for an e-reader is too much for many, but you can currently get it on Amazon for $270 , a full 10% discount—below the pre-tariff price. It’s not a huge discount, but I’ve been tracking Amazon prices for this device since its release and have never seen it cheaper—the last time it was discounted was during Prime Day last summer.
In short, if you’re convinced by my review, or you’re simply intrigued by the viral hype surrounding the Palma 2 (which has a devoted following on TikTok, not to mention a vibrant Reddit community), now is the time to get one.
The original Palma model is also back in stock on Amazon.
While it wasn’t discounted further during Prime Day, you can spend $25 less by opting for the original Palma 2, which dropped to $246 when the new device debuted last November. While the Palma has a slightly slower processor, runs an older version of Android, and lacks a fingerprint scanner, it’s still likely a better value for most people—assuming you can find one in stock in the US ( I’ve compiled a full comparison if you’re still undecided ). Luckily, Amazon has the original Palma in stock at the time of writing, albeit in very limited quantities. If you’re sold on the idea of a phone-sized e-reader, I can’t imagine you’ll be disappointed, no matter which option you choose.
