While Apple is still struggling to catch up with its tech rivals in the AI race, one feature it implemented before companies like Google or Samsung is notification summaries . Thanks to Apple Intelligence, your iPhone can transform long messages and alerts into concise, easy-to-read summaries. The idea is to avoid sifting through a sea of notifications and simply skim through the ones you missed and quickly get to the heart of the matter.
However, the implementation was a disaster. While Apple’s AI could provide accurate summaries, some of its results were wildly inaccurate. The most infamous example was when Apple Intelligence misinterpreted a BBC news alert, claiming that the alleged shooter of UnitedHealthcare CEO Luigi Mangione had committed suicide in prison. Following this incident, Apple discontinued the “Notification Summary” feature for news and entertainment notifications until the release of iOS 26 .
But even if the summaries are accurate, they’re not always perfect. When Apple first released the feature, one user went viral by sharing how the notification summaries summarized two breakup messages from their partner: “We’re no longer in a relationship; I need to get my stuff out of the apartment.” In theory, it might be nice to see a summary of a long series of notifications; in practice, it might be better to read the messages yourself.
It’s against this backdrop that the latest news about AI notification summaries comes to us: Samsung is currently working on its own version of notification summaries for Galaxy devices.
Notification summaries in One UI 8.5
SamMobile has learned that Samsung is actively working on a new AI-powered notification summary feature for Galaxy devices. The publication discovered this feature in the latest Samsung One UI 8.5 firmware update, which is already available for the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
SamMobile has this firmware installed, but the feature itself isn’t working yet. However, a pop-up explaining how it works is working . If you open the notification panel on a Galaxy running One UI 8.5, you’ll see the following message: “Your long conversations can now be summarized for quick overviews.”
You’ll also find a new settings menu for “Notification Summary,” which, while not yet active, explains the feature in more detail: “Create summaries of long messages and group conversations for quick, concise overviews. These summaries are created using on-device AI, which can sometimes make mistakes. Your messages are never sent to Google.” Here, you can now select apps to exclude from these summaries, though again, the summaries themselves are not yet available at the time of writing.
Still, this is an interesting first look at how Samsung plans to implement AI-powered notifications. As the current explanation suggests, the feature will use an AI model to summarize alerts, and SamMobile believes this will likely be the Gemini Nano . The Nano is Google’s fast and lightweight model, designed to run natively. This aligns with what we see here, as the feature states that no data is sent to Google when summarizing notifications.
If you’re going to use AI, processing the data on-device is certainly better than sending it over the internet. Still, it will be interesting to see how Samsung and Apple compare. Will Samsung offer a more robust way to summarize notifications, or will it be more like iOS? Incidentally, I had to disable the “Notification Overview” feature on my iPhone. It proved practically useless, even when the data was accurate. If I had a Galaxy, I wouldn’t be surprised if I did the same.
