Apple has reportedly paused its Vision Pro headset update plan to accelerate development of smart glasses. According to Bloomberg , last week, Apple announced it was shifting staff and resources from the next version of the Vision Pro to the development of two as-yet-unnamed Apple-branded smart glasses.

Apple’s first glasses, codenamed N50, are audio- and AI-focused glasses designed to work with the iPhone, similar to the first-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses . Apple plans to launch them in 2026. The second, more ambitious Apple glasses will feature a display, like the second-generation Meta smart glasses . According to Bloomberg sources, the initial release date for Apple glasses with a display was set for 2028, but the company decided to accelerate development to release them earlier.

Vision Pro will receive an update, not a continuation

Apple isn’t stopping work on the Vision Pro. The company apparently still plans to release an improved version of its headset this year. The Vision Pro will feature a faster chip (and undoubtedly other minor improvements), but it’s not a new generation of the headset.

Apple is also reportedly working on a Siri update, scheduled for release in March 2026. The more powerful AI assistant will undoubtedly be integrated into all Apple devices, from phones, computers, and cameras to smart glasses.

What do you think at the moment?

The future reality will be augmented, not virtual.

Given the disappointing sales of Apple’s Vision Pro headsets and how far Apple is lagging behind the smartglasses industry leader (Meta released its first AI-powered smartglasses back in 2021), it’s no surprise that the company is devoting resources to catching up. However, this is disappointing news for Apple Vision Pro fans. If the company pauses development of the next generation of its VR headset, support for the current generation will likely suffer.

If you’re hesitating between buying smart glasses or a VR headset, all signs point to a future where glasses and augmented reality will play a larger role, while headsets and VR will play a smaller role. The ultimate goal of tech companies like Apple, Google, Amazon, and Meta is to create true augmented reality experiences in glasses that can completely replace smartphones. How long it will take to develop glasses that can replace your phone (and essentially all other screens) is still unknown, but I’ve been using Meta smart glasses every day for almost a year and tried a screen-free day using Xreal Display glasses. A smartphone-free future doesn’t seem so far away.
