October’s Prime Day is just around the corner , bringing a wave of discounts and savings. Amazon wants you to think every deal you see is worth your time and attention, but in reality, only a few of these deals are truly good .
All this chaos overwhelms even the most experienced online shopper, and it’s hard to know if you’re actually saving . But there’s one category that will undoubtedly stand out during Prime Days: Amazon-made tech . This includes products like Fire tablets, Fire TV Cubes, and everything else Amazon makes.
At typical tech sales, most sellers want you to buy whatever they can convince you to spend money on, whether it’s an iPhone or Android, a Mac or PC, an Xbox or PlayStation. They just want as much of your money as possible, which is why traditional sales like Black Friday offer discounts on products from a wide variety of brands and manufacturers. But Amazon is a different story.
Amazon is both a store and a manufacturer.
The company sells a wide range of products from a variety of manufacturers, but it also makes its own technology. If you need a new smart TV, Amazon makes one ; if you just need a smart TV streaming device, Amazon makes that too . For home security, there are Blink and Ring products. Alexa controls many of these devices, so why not get one of its smart speakers or screens controlled by the personal assistant? Amazon Basics also makes a variety of accessories, from USB cables to battery packs.
Amazon makes so much technology these days that it’s only logical that they’d rather sell you their own version of a product than the competition. Instead of a Roku, buy a Fire TV Stick. Instead of a Nest Mini, buy an Echo Pop. It seems Amazon has similar products in almost every category—they even make their own headphones ( Echo Buds ).
The quality of these products compared to competitors is certainly debatable, and I recommend you do your own research before purchasing any tech product, whether from Amazon or anyone else. But whenever you search for a tech product on Amazon, especially on Prime Day, you’re sure to be offered an Amazon alternative. Using this event to offer lucrative discounts on your products is in the company’s best interest.
Amazon is still a marketplace, and buying anything is profitable for them, so if you end up choosing a Samsung TV over an Amazon one, it’s still a sale. That’s why you’ll find plenty of deals on non-Amazon devices on Prime Day in October. But Amazon products will be the most heavily promoted and likely receive the biggest discounts and promotions.
But don’t make impulsive purchases.
Aside from tempting discounts and enticing bundles, don’t buy a device on Amazon just because it looks like an incredible deal. If you’re looking for a specific Amazon product and it’s on sale, great. It’s a smart buy. However, if you were more interested in a device not on Amazon, and the Amazon version is now significantly cheaper, don’t chase the deal; buy what you really want.
Take the time to learn the differences between Amazon’s version and its competitors. If you find an Amazon device you want to buy, you can set up alerts to be notified when the item reaches your desired price . This is good general advice for any Prime Day deal (or any major purchase), but given how aggressively Amazon will be promoting its products in October, it’s especially important to keep this in mind. If you buy anything on Prime Day, hopefully you’ll get a discount on the best devices , whether they’re Amazon-made or not.
