After installing a major update like iOS 26, the more you use it, the more you discover. You might find a new way to improve battery life or get rid of spam calls and text messages forever . However, for me, one of the most interesting discoveries was a small but great change to group chats, which also lets you see which of your contacts have also updated to iOS 26.

Typing indicators join group chat

After updating my iPhone to iOS 26, group chats began supporting typing indicators, or, in other words, the tiny speech bubbles you see in individual chats in Messages. When I first enter a group chat after updating my iPhone and see someone typing, it’s a bit annoying, as this feature has only been available in individual chats for my entire iMessage history. It almost felt like a glitch to me β€”it shouldn’t be like that .

But this is actually a great update. Now group chats aren’t just a pause between messages: you can see when other people are working on a reply to one of your messages, so you won’t be surprised the next time you’re inundated with new messages. On the other hand, if you don’t see those chat bubbles, you’ll know no one is actually working on something to say. A pause is a pause.

Interestingly, since iOS 26 is required to display typing indicators, this new feature serves as a sort of indicator of which of your contacts have updated to the latest OS. Here’s what I discovered after a couple of weeks of using iOS 26: I’ll be in group chats where messages arrive unannounced as usual, but one contact will appear as a typing bubble. I’m sure that someday, not too long from now, this will cease to be the norm, and I’ll see most contacts typing in group messages. But for now, this is an important observation.

What do you think at the moment?

Just remember: if you’re using iOS 26, anyone else using iOS 26 will see what you’re typing in a group chat. This might take some muscle memory. Until now, you could type and send messages in group chats as much as you wanted without prompting. But now, some (if not all) chat participants will be able to see when you start typing a message.

This isn’t the only change Apple has made to messaging in iOS 26. In fact, there are many new features , including chat backgrounds, the ability to copy individual words from messages, and polls similar to those found in other chat apps and social media platforms.
