This Orbital Massage Gun Has Now Become an Integral Part of My Workout Routine.

Most of us are familiar with the post-workout massage gun ritual. You finish your session, grab a percussion massager, and massage your aching muscles, hoping to speed up recovery. But after a few weeks of using the Rally Orbital Massager (which I reviewed ), I think the real magic happens before you even start sweating.

Instead of relying solely on static stretching ( scary !) or basic warm-up moves, I now spend 5-10 minutes using Rally on major muscle groups before every workout, and it’s quickly become a permanent fixture in my pre-run routine.

A real alternative to a massage gun

I love massage guns . Traditional ones use a percussive, slamming motion that can be effective for kneading knots and targeting specific problem areas. But for pre-workout preparation, the orbital motion of the Rally offers distinct advantages.

First, there’s a difference between gentle muscle activation and sharp, aggressive stimulation. Orbital motion provides a smoother, more controlled stimulation that awakens muscles without the sharp movements associated with percussion. This is important when you’re preparing muscles for work rather than trying to force them to work through fatigue.

Additionally, instead of hitting the same spot repeatedly, orbital motion covers a larger surface area and promotes greater blood flow to the muscle tissue. In my experience, I have noticed how much better the movement feels when I use Rally before a workout compared to traditional warm-up methods.

However, the Rally does cost more than most massage guns on the market. Quality percussion massagers can cost anywhere from $100 to $300, so the Rally’s $499 price tag initially seems like a bad deal. I’d argue that while the Rally can be laid on its side and used for percussion, there’s no way to replicate orbital massage with traditional percussion guns. It’s not just a more expensive version of the same thing—it’s actually different technology. If the Rally prevents even one injury that would have kept me out of work for weeks or required physical therapy, it will have more than paid for itself.

How to Use Rally Before a Workout

Here’s how I integrated Rally into my pre-workout routine:

What do you think at the moment?

Legs (3-4 minutes) : As a runner, this is the fun part for me. I start with the quads, doing about 45 seconds of Rally on each leg at a moderate intensity. Then I move on to the hamstrings and calves. The orbital motion seems to “wake up” the entire leg more effectively than foam rolling or static stretching.

Upper Body (2-3 minutes) : On bench or shoulder days, I use Rally for my pecs, front deltoids, and upper traps. The warm-up is immediate and noticeable—I feel my muscles become more flexible and ready to move.

Specific Problem Areas (1-2 minutes) : I have a chronically tight IT band and some shoulder mobility issues. Quickly hitting these areas with the Rally for 30-45 seconds before my workout has cut down on warm-up time and increased range of motion.

Bottom line

The Rally isn’t just another massage gun, but a tool that truly improves the quality and consistency of my workouts. While most people focus on what to do after a workout to recover, I believe the real breakthrough is what this device can do before a workout to improve performance. If you’re looking to optimize your muscle care regimen, the Rally is worth serious consideration if you can justify the price.
