Luna Smart Ring Is Oura’s Latest Subscription-Free Alternative

There’s a new subscription-free smart ring on the market, and unlike the Oura ring, it doesn’t require a subscription. The Luna Ring 2.0 is even cheaper, starting at $300 (or $349 with a charging case), which is about $50 cheaper than the Oura and Ultrahuman.

The Luna ring is designed by Indian wearables company Noise. Luna 2.0 is the first version of the ring to be available in the U.S., in case you were wondering if you missed the previous model. Noise announced the ring at CES in January , and now it’s finally coming to market.

According to the specs, the Luna ring and its app will track sleep, heart rate, and blood oxygen levels, automatically detect walking and running, and provide AI coaching. Like the Ultrahuman device, it will also provide caffeine window reminders. A comparison chart on the product page lists the software as “free,” as opposed to the Oura, which has a $5.99-per-month subscription, and the Ultrahuman, which has “limited paid features” (Ultrahuman offers paid add-ons), suggesting that Noise doesn’t plan to offer a premium subscription either. (I’ve put together a full cost comparison of the Oura Ring and Ultrahuman if you’re curious, but suffice it to say, the Luna should be cheaper than both devices.)

However, Noise’s comparison chart seems a little odd to me: It states that the Ultrahuman and Oura have the same battery life and charging time, but I found that the two devices are significantly different, with Oura having a longer battery life and a shorter charging time. It will be interesting to see if Luna delivers on its promises of “4-7 days” of battery life and “120 minutes” of charging. These specs put it roughly on par with the Ultrahuman.

What do you think at the moment?

So far, the Luna seems like a decent Oura clone, minus the monthly fee. It also has one feature that neither of its two main competitors have: a charging case. According to the company, the Luna ring’s charging case provides 30 days of battery life. In my opinion, being able to take the case with me in my gym bag or on a trip is a novelty, since I always take my smart ring off when I’m strength training, and I’d like to have somewhere to put it. And if it also charges the battery, even better.
