Since October 2024, you’ve had the option to buy a Colorsoft version of the Amazon Kindle in color. The original Signature Edition with 32GB of storage has recently been joined by a cheaper 16GB version , though it’s questionable whether the $30 savings are worth it, since you lose wireless charging and automatic brightness, and have half the storage.
In our Amazon Kindle Colorsoft review, you’ll see that there’s a long-running debate about whether paying extra for a color e-reader screen over a fully functional black-and-white model is worth it. Many people are happy with the monochrome screen, but if you’ve already shelled out for a color screen or are wondering if it’s worth it, here are some additional options.
Color highlighting
This is one of the most useful additional features of the color screen: the ability to use different colors when highlighting blocks of text. For example, you can use different colors for quotes from different characters or to highlight different categories.
Selecting text is done the same way as on any other Kindle device: press and hold the word you want, then drag the handles left and right and select Highlight . Press and hold the highlighted text again to choose from four colors.
Switching between color styles
Colorsoft offers two color styles to switch between depending on ambient light levels or desired color saturation – though neither mode comes close to matching what you get on your phone’s display.
From the home screen, tap the three dots (top right corner), then select Settings. Under Display & Brightness, you’ll find the Color Style option with the option to switch between Standard (for everyday reading) and Vivid (to enhance the color saturation on your screen).
Opening documents and articles in color
Your Kindle can also be used to read documents and articles. You can transfer files to these e-readers in several ways, including via USB or by sending them to your unique Kindle email address.
This can be done on any Kindle, but only Kindle Colorsoft displays images, charts, fonts, etc. in color. While eBooks are typically mostly black and white after the cover, your documents and saved articles may be different.
Show color cover on lock screen
Of course, you can do this on black and white Kindles, but it’s a little more fun with a color screen.
From the home screen, tap the three dots (top right corner), then select Settings . Tap Display & Brightness , then Show covers on lock screen — and voila! When you lock your device, you’ll see the cover of the book you’re currently reading in a bright color.
