If you’re a Halloween fan like me, or just want to outshine the neighbors with your decor, nothing beats Skelly , a 12-foot-tall skeleton from Home Depot with light-up eyes and posable limbs. But if you’ve been looking for one online outside of Home Depot’s Labor Day sale, you’ve probably noticed that the spooky prop can be purchased online for between $800 and $1,200. There’s a time of year when you, too, can be the proud owner of a giant faux skeleton — for just $299 — and it’s the best part of this year’s Labor Day sales .
Finding the Skelly in stock has always been a challenge, but it’s now available in stores and online, along with a few other big brothers, for $299. You can order it and pick it up at your local Home Depot, or take advantage of free shipping, which can take about a week but will save you on shipping costs. The Skelly is an exclusive and limited supply, so the best way to get it is to order early.
Skelly’s characteristics
Skelly is about 1.5 meters wide (depending on pose) and about 3.5 meters tall when assembled. His eyes light up with eight different effects. Includes LCD remote control, power adapter, and stand.
Home Depot says it takes two people to set up, and I’d say that’s the bare minimum to avoid dropping or damaging the figure. I found that with a helper, Skelly could be assembled and posed in an hour or less.
While the Skelly comes with a harness and pegs for added stability, if you live in an area prone to high winds, it wouldn’t hurt to add a sandbag or two of your own to the base for safety.
Once Skelly is assembled, you can turn on his light-up eyes using the included timer, which is preset to 6 hours (on/off) and 18 hours (off). If you want to set his eyes to a different time interval, you can turn them on continuously and use an external timer to turn them on and off.
Skelly is said to be safe to place both indoors and outdoors, so if you have ceilings that are 12 feet or higher, it is technically safe to place indoors, although I think most people will likely keep it outside.
Before you buy Skelly, it’s worth thinking about storage – even when folded, its box measures 111.5 by 111.5 by 71.5 cm. It’s an almost square box, almost 1.2 meters in size and more than 60 cm deep.
How to use Skelly
If you want to avoid storage issues, you can opt for the solution that many creative Skelly owners have chosen and keep it year-round. Yes, it’s true: Skelly isn’t just for Halloween anymore. Skelly can be repurposed and rearranged for any occasion or holiday, eliminating the need to store it.
Skelly also comes with a few giant bone friends, so if you have enough space in your yard, you can gather them up and create a village of giant mythical creature bones. A popular companion for Skelly is his 7-foot-tall dog skeleton , complete with matching LED eyes. Skelly is such an animal lover that he can also be accompanied by a 5-foot-tall cat skeleton , complete with the same glowing eyes as the rest of the collection.
