The early Labor Day sales are starting with great deals on all sorts of tech. If your audio game needs a little help, there are plenty of great deals to choose from, from Sony’s latest headphones to Nothing’s trendy new earbuds.
After years of anticipation, Amazon has finally released its own line of color e-readers. Kindle Colorsoft offers the same Kindle ecosystem and all the benefits of reading, but with a color e-ink display. It’s built on the new Paperwhite, which provides high contrast and fast page turns. It has an adjustable warm backlight, and unlike other basic Kindles, there are no ads.
And for Labor Day, Amazon is offering a $30 discount on the new Colorsoft Kindle for the first time, bringing the price of the new model to $219.99 .
But most importantly, the E-ink display is based on E Ink’s Kaleido technology. It features specially developed nitride LEDs that improve color reproduction and increase brightness. You’ll be able to enjoy full-color book covers, graphic novels, and some types of manga. However, reading remains the same – black and white. The color display displays content at 150 PPI, but the black and white reading mode still delivers the 300 PPI clarity that has become the standard for the Kindle Paperwhite. Thanks to the E Ink display, battery life remains the same – eight weeks.
Until now, Kindle only offered the Colorsoft Signature version, starting at $280 . But now Amazon has released a new base Colorsoft model with 16GB of storage (up from 32GB) and dropped features like wireless charging and automatic brightness adjustment. Still, the Colorsoft still has more than enough perks to make it a worthwhile purchase.
Lifehacker’s Deputy Technical Editor Michelle Ehrhardt gave the Kindle Colorsoft a 3.5-star rating, noting that “The Colorsoft is a neat little device that offers clear improvements over other e-readers when it comes to displaying color images.”
On the other hand, Amazon is also offering a $20 discount on the base model Kindle. The newest model can be purchased for $89.99 , which is significantly less than the $109.99 it cost on Labor Day.
