WhatsApp Beta Tests Missed Call Messages

“Leave a message after the tone.” We all expect this option to explain why we’re calling when someone has missed a call. Not so with messaging apps. Even though these apps are the primary method of communication for many, most of them, including WhatsApp, don’t offer voicemail. That’s changing.

As reported by WABetaInfo , WhatsApp is currently beta testing a feature that allows you to leave messages if someone misses a call. The feature is not available to all beta testers, but some users are already seeing it in the latest beta version.

Here’s how it works: If you call someone on WhatsApp and they don’t answer, you’ll have the standard options to call back or cancel the call. However, the latest beta may introduce a third option: “Record a voice message.” This option also appears in your text conversation with the contact, underneath the missed voice call record.

Whichever way you choose to record your message, WhatsApp will send a voice note in the text thread and save a missed call notification so the other user can quickly catch up. It’s certainly not a revolutionary feature, as voice messages have been possible on WhatsApp for a long time, but it’s convenient, and it’s nice that WhatsApp has developed this feature to interact with calls.

If WhatsApp rolls out the feature to the public, it will join a handful of apps that offer it, such as FaceTime , which allows users to leave audio or video messages for missed calls.

How to install WhatsApp beta

If you want to try this feature and any other early WhatsApp beta features, you’ll almost certainly need an Android device. While there is already a beta version of WhatsApp for iOS, it’s constantly being updated . There’s always a chance that a beta version will become available, but I’ve never seen it happen before.

If you have an Android phone, you can sign up for the WhatsApp beta here . Once you’re a tester, you can download the official WhatsApp app from the Play Store if you don’t already have it, or wait for the next update. Beta testing is done through the official app, so you’ll receive new beta versions through traditional software updates through the Play Store.
