New to Prime Day? We’ve got everything you need to get started . Sales information is accurate at time of publication, but prices and stock levels are subject to change.
Today is the last day of Amazon’s Prime Day sale, which means it’s your last chance to take advantage of some of the best prices on e-readers this year. Given that Amazon’s Kindle is synonymous with e-readers, it’s no surprise that the retailer is using the annual sale as an excuse to offer big discounts on its devices. But right now, you can also save on e-readers and notebooks from Boox — my personal picks for the best Kindle alternatives.
Here are the deals you can still get before Prime Day ends tonight, July 11:
Boox Palma 2 in phone form
The Boox Palma 2 may be one of the most expensive e-readers on this list, but in my opinion, it’s the one you should get . It’s a phone-sized form factor, so you can carry it around with you wherever you go to read instead of mindlessly scrolling. It runs an open version of Android, so you can download all the reading apps you want from the Google Play store. It can do almost everything your phone can do except take calls, and it does it all on an eye-straining E Ink screen. It’s one of my all-time favorite gadgets, but it’s almost never on sale, so take advantage of the $30 discount before Prime Day ends.
Best Kindle Paperwhite
If you’re interested in Amazon’s e-book ecosystem, you no doubt already have a Kindle, but now is the time to upgrade: The top-of-the-line Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, with a better screen and backlight, double the storage, and no lock screen ads, is currently 25% off, making it just $150.
Kindle Colorsoft with the best color e-ink display
I’m not a huge fan of color e-ink, which I think is still evolving, but there’s no denying that the Kindle Colorsoft has the best color display on the market . I don’t think it’s worth the $280, but it’s a lot better value for $100 less. It’s the best price for a Colorsoft in a long time.
Kindle Scribe so you can take notes on your books
If you love your Kindle but want to take notes on it like you would on a real paper book, the Kindle Scribe might be for you . It’s compatible with a stylus, so you can write on books, mark up PDFs, and take notes. It usually costs $400, but you can get it for $260 — at least until Prime Day is over.
Boox Note Air 4C — a full-fledged color tablet with e-ink
Honestly, if you’re choosing an e-notebook, I wouldn’t recommend the Scribe. Yes, the Boox Note Air 4C is almost twice as expensive right now, and the Prime Day discount is a lot less at $20. But consider this: The Scribe is a Kindle with some writing features, while the Note Air 4C is essentially a full-fledged Android e-ink tablet with access to Google Play for all your reading apps, light games, and office apps, and a great writing experience thanks to the included stylus. Plus, it has a large 10.3-inch color display, making it my top pick for reading comics on an e-ink screen .
Boox Note Max with a big, loud 13.3-inch screen
To ensure that black-and-white content is displayed as crisply and clearly as possible, the Boox Note Max eschews a color screen and a backlight (both of which create extra layers between your eyes and text, reducing brightness and clarity), but otherwise it packs all the features of the Note Air 4C into a huge 13.3-inch package. It’s fairly expensive, but the current $60 discount makes it the lowest price I’ve seen (as noted, Boox devices are almost never on sale).
