If you’re planning on serious DIY projects, like building a deck or installing shelves in brick or concrete, you might want to consider adding a hammer drill to your cordless toolbox. DeWalt’s powerful 20-volt, three-speed hammer drill is on sale for $159 through Prime Day, 43% off its regular price. It delivers more drilling power than a regular drill, thanks to increased impact force and torque, making it better able to drill into thick beams, harder materials like brick or concrete, and use larger drill bits.

When you need a hammer drill

I live in a house that is over 100 years old and we have lath and plaster walls, which are great for sound insulation and durability, but they are impossible to hang anything on. I ended up using a hammer drill for this, as well as for attaching the metal railing to the concrete walkway at the base of the steps. A hammer drill makes it easier to drill through thick, durable material, especially if you have a lot of holes to drill.

In addition to making your job easier, a hammer drill’s motor is more powerful, so your motor will work with less effort. Because hammer drills are designed to work with harder materials, they are typically designed to have more resistance and can withstand more friction when drilling without overheating the motor.

How does a hammer drill work?

The hammer drill works by adding a hammer effect to the torque of a regular drill, increasing the pressure on the drill bit. This extra momentum periodically increases the pressure on the drill bit, making it easier to drill into hard, thick material, especially when using a larger diameter drill bit. The hammer function can be turned off for drilling regular materials, so this drill can be used for general woodworking or DIY projects.

This driver is a great complement to a hammer drill, and from my experience building a deck with one, I can tell you that the extra power will make the job easier if you have a lot of long fasteners to drive.
