In 2015, I accidentally created a serious problem for myself: I bought my mom a first-generation Amazon Echo, thinking she might like the then-new smart speaker. She certainly did, which meant that for every holiday, birthday, and special occasion for the past decade, I’ve had to find new smart tech to get her. With an Echo in every room, blinds that open and close on their own, smart locks on every door, I was running out of gift options. In December, I stumbled across an Amazon smart thermostat and immediately bought it for her as a Christmas gift. She’s been enjoying it for months — and now you can, too, because it’s 30% off on Prime Day . The sale ends tonight, though.
What is he doing?
In addition to looking sleek and stylish on your wall, this device makes it easy to replace your traditional thermostat with a more modern one that can reduce energy consumption and save you money. You’ll need an Amazon Echo to give it voice commands like “Alexa, turn up the temperature,” but it works just fine without one.
You can set it to automatically switch between preset temperature settings. For example, in the summer, when you’re at home, you can set it to a cooler temperature, and when you’re at work, the air conditioner will automatically turn off until you return, saving energy and money. You can also set the desired temperature at any time using the Alexa app on your phone, even when you’re not at home.
Another helpful way to save: After your purchase, Amazon will send you an email detailing discounts that may be available from energy providers near you. The unit is Energy Star certified, which qualifies you for a variety of discounts and helps you save energy overall.

The smart thermostat normally retails for $79.99 (that’s what I paid in December, unfortunately), but is now available for $51.99.
Consider also picking up Amazon’s Smart Air Quality Sensor , which can work together to detect and correct overheating and undercooling in your home. It’s 36 percent off, down from $69.99 to $44.99. Honestly, I’ll probably buy one for my mom and just hold onto it until the next big holiday. (Just don’t tell her.)
