While you were reading your Kindle, I was checking out the Boox. This line of e-ink devices from Chinese company Onyx may be little known in the U.S. outside of its cult following (who you can chat with on Reddit), but it has a lot to offer those looking for an alternative to the Kindle Paperwhite (or iPad , for that matter).

While the phone-shaped Boox Palma 2 is my personal favorite e-reader , Boox also makes productivity-focused e-notebooks that aim to combine the easy-on-the-eyes screen of a Kindle with the functionality of an iPad. They even feature writable screens, so you can take notes and sketches with a stylus, just like a regular notebook. And the biggest, and arguably coolest, Boox e-notebook is the Boox Note Max , a huge 13.3-inch all-in-one gadget.

When I reviewed this beast last year, I focused on its versatility (it runs the open Android operating system with access to the Google Play store, so it will run all the same apps as an Android LED tablet, and you can use it as a laptop by adding a special keyboard case ) and excellent writing experience (while it’s not exactly pen and paper, it feels pretty good).

But as much as I’d like to say I use it to organize all my notes, I mostly read manga on the Boox Note Max. The Shonen Jump app looks stunning on the Carta 1300’s crisp black-and-white screen, and the 13.3-inch screen real estate reveals details that are much harder to appreciate on a tankobon page. This app has brought me back to the medium in many ways, which is great because if my son is constantly bombarding me with One Piece facts, I need to be able to understand what he’s talking about.

What do you think at the moment?

The downside to non-Kindle e-ink devices is that they’re niche, and therefore expensive. Plus, since all e-ink screens are made in China, they’ve gotten more expensive lately due to tariffs. But right now, the Boox Note Max (along with the Boox Palma 2 and Boox Note Air 4C ) is having a rare Prime Day sale. You can save $60 on the Note Max right now—not a huge discount from the $690 retail price, but still a nice deal.

(Full disclosure: Unless you need a truly huge screen, the Boox Note Air 4C is probably a better buy for most people — while color e-ink has some drawbacks, it’s a great device for reading comics. Oh, and for work, I suppose.)
